Welcome to the weekly newsletter. We survived a brutally cold weekend that saw temperatures plummet to -40 degrees with a high of -10 degrees on Saturday. These temperatures locked up the river up above Hebgen and made quite the ice jam down near Ennis. It was a good weekend to pick up a book or tie some flies! Thankfully we should see some warmer temperatures this coming weekend allowing us to get back outside and enjoy some beautiful winter days!

Last week I was going through some of the articles on the website and I truly enjoyed re-reading them. It never seems to fail that I pick up something new or am reminded of something I probably shouldn't have forgotten. John did a wonderful job on these thought provoking passages, all of them are quick reads with the ability to keep you mentally engaged with fishing for hours. That's invaluable for a fisherman this time of year unless you happen to live in the southeast.

We've been bringing in a lot of new materials and new colors of old favorites this winter so that means we have quite a bit of fly tying goodies on Sale! This is a great opportunity to grab some materials at a discount for tying season. Just a few short months and we'll be back to fishing full time so take some time during the polar vortex to get those boxes filled and ready to go!

As always give us a call at the shop, swing in or shoot us an email if you have any questions!

Fishing Report

We have our fingers crossed that this weekends forecast holds true and allows us to get out for a day or two. Temperatures are looking to be much warmer than this past weekend and as long as the winds don't go too wild it should make for some nice fishing. Small flies like #20 Red Zebra Midges dropped under a #20 Zebra Klinkhammer should do the trick if there's active fish. If you're not finding fish on the surface or suspended, fish those little nymphs behind a #8 Black Rubberlegs or #10 San Juan Worm in red or pink.

Fly of the Week

Peacock and Partridge

This classic soft hackle has been effective since monks fished it on English chalk streams with horse hair leaders and cane poles. Try it the next time you're on the Firehole for a taste of fly fishing history.

Spanish Bullet

This slender little quill jig will get down fast and stay in the strike zone. A year round producer on the Madison!

Materials of the Week

Hungarian Partridge Skin

Limited quantities available for these beautiful wild birds. There is no question this bird is as valuable to the fly tier as anything that flies. The feathers come in shades of brown and gray, are finely speckled, wrap like a dream, come in a nice range of sizes, and can be used on dry or wet patterns. These are wild birds NOT pen-raised!

Umpqua U001

A 1x long standard dry fly hook for Sparkle Duns, X-Caddis and traditional dries.

Ephemera Silk Thread

This high-quality silk thread is the perfect replacement for the no-longer-available Pearsall's silk. It comes in a great array of colors that tie beautiful wet flies, and we've found that it ties very similarly to the classic Pearsall's thread, though the Ephemera is just a bit finer in diameter. It also comes on a wooden spool that will fit in a standard-size bobbin. If you are tying classic like the Partridge & Floss or Snipe & Purple, this is the thread you want! 100 meters per spool. New colors added!

Products of the Week

Grundens Steelhead Flannel

A cold weather fishing shirt built from 180-gram polyester featuring moister wicking and quick dry technologies. The Steelhead flannel is designed to keep you fishing all day and looking good during story telling time.

Loon Ergo Bodkin

The traditional bodkin gets an overdue ergonomic facelift. The needle is made from spring steel for top-notch strength, and the powder coated ergonomic handle provides superior grip.

Simms Wool Half Finger Gloves

One of our favorite classic half finger gloves. Keeps hands warm even when wet. TPU palm overlay increases durability and grip.

It was a bit brisk last Saturday morning.
