What's Happening in Yellowstone Country

It's weekly newsletter time and we're glad to have you! It's been a wild ride with the temperature here in West Yellowstone over the last few weeks. Two Saturdays ago we woke up to -44º and this past Saturday we hit a peak of 37º here in town...which makes for an insane 81º temperature swing in a seven day period! A few of our guys took advantage of the little warm spell and got out to chase some fish and from the sounds of it found some pretty good fishing. This weekend looks as though it should provide some more opportunites for angling for those looking to get out of the house.

I spent a lot of my weekend experimenting at the vise and watching some great playoff football games. This is the first place I have lived where there's an "off season" for fishing so I do my best to make good use of the time to tie. I always try and have a good selection of the long time favorites but there's a lot of fun to be had tinkering with fly ideas. Chances are I'm not coming up with the next Sparkle Dun or Elk Hair Caddis but I have pretty good odds of coming up with a fly that fishes better for me. Here's an example, I love the Morrish Hopper but I can't see that orange piece of foam on top to save my life. A simple change to yellow foam on top when I tie them and I can track the fly all day. So while it's not creating a new fly I was able to make a slight change to an established pattern in order for it to fish better for me.

Another simple change we can make is dubbing type or color to better match the bugs you're seeing. Whether you're fishing caddis on the Madison or Iso's on the Manistee, there's a variety of dubbings you can play with to better match what you're encountering on the water. Or on the complete opposite end maybe you want to see how goofy a fly you can get them to eat. I keep a row of X-Caddis tied with purple Ice Dub and there are some evenings where they can't get enough of it. Again, it's not a new invention by any means but it creates an opportunity to have more fun tying and fishing!

As always give us a call at the shop, swing in or shoot us an email if you have any questions!

Fishing Report

Jordan and Tom Belyea were able to sneak out for some fishing last Friday afternoon and found a good handful of hungry fish. They fished a nymph rig consisting of a #8 Rubber Legs trailed by a Zebra Midge in red or black all afternoon. Pretty standard fare for this time of year. It wouldn't be a bad idea to carry a selection of midge dries just in case you find some fish working the surface. We like a #18 Zebra Klinkhammer or Griffith's Gnat for those winter time surface feeders.

Flies of the Week

Psycho Prince

This flashy twist on the classic Prince Nymph comes from our friend Mike Mercer. Fish love purple flies, so the next time you are thinking of fishing a purple nymph, try the Psycho Prince.

Micro Beeley

Because of the effectiveness of the larger Shakey Beeley pattern for fall runners, we thought it might be a good idea to scale the fly down for use as a summer attractor. Aaron and Craig teamed up to create a slimmer, simpler pattern that maintained the great color scheme of the original, and it works great swinging during spring and summer when there isn't a great hatch present. We particularly recommend it for high water during early season on the Firehole, you'll knock 'em cold.

Sale Fly of the Week

MFC Water Walker

On Sale! Original price $3.50. The foam body and wing keep this fly floating high and the way the legs are knotted provides realistic movement.

Materials of the Week

Pheasant Tail Singles

Ringneck Pheasant Center tail feathers perfect for PT nymphs, shop vacs and more. 2 per pack.

Mirage Opal Tinsel

This is a super reflective tinsel with color shifting, mirror-like properties that creates an iridescent, chameleon effect. This is perfect for flashbacks and ribs on Czech nymphs.

Umpqua U101 Hook

1x long nymph hook for traditional beadheads and soft hackles.

English Grouse Wings

The shoulder feathers on these wings provide beautiful dark hackles for a variety of wet flies. Perfect for tying big fall soft hackles for runners on the Madison. They are also a great choice for legs and tails on a variety of nymph patterns.

Products of the Week

Scientific Anglers Infinity Taper

A wonderful "do it all" taper available at three different price points. The Amplitude series is Scientific Angler's slickest and longest lasting coating while the Mastery series uses the same AST coating that everyone knows and loves. It's time to replace that old fly line and it's tough to beat the Infinity taper!

Tiemco Razor Scissors

Bucky bought a pair of these scissors and has found them to be the finest scissors he has ever used. Incredibly sharp with extremely fine tips.

Fishpond Headgate Tippet Holder

When you use fishpond’s Headgate tippet dispenser, you will wonder why no one has thought of anything like it before. The spring loaded hinge design allows an angler to easily add, remove and carry most tippet spools with ease. Just clip it on somewhere close and forget about the days of fishing through your waders, vest or pack searching for those loose spools. Dropped your nippers on the hike in? Not to worry, the Headgate also features a built in cutting blade for ultimate convenience. Anodized aerospace aluminum retractor/lanyard attachment hole, replaceable razor blade line cutter holds seven tippet spools. Secure spring loaded pull for access to change spools.
