APPLICATION ENGINEERING

Protecting & Measuring Rack-Level
Power in AI Data Centers

In AI data centers, a single rack can draw 20 kW or more, and the rack power distribution unit (rPDU) now meters energy at each outlet, absorbs transients, and reports to the facility network. A new Bourns white paper and application brief cover the three design areas that most affect rPDU reliability: overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection for supervisory electronics, and current sensing for outlet-level power usage effectiveness (PUE) reporting.

Layered surge protection. Primary surge protective devices (SPDs) at the service entrance absorb lightning and grid events, secondary SPDs at distribution panels clamp the residual energy, and the rPDU handles what reaches the rack plus transients from GPU load steps, server inrush, and adjacent equipment. Bourns® 1220, 1250 and 1270 Series SPDs cover AC MCOV ratings from 150 V to 750 V and 8/20 µs surge current ratings from 22 kA to 100 kA, depending on configuration.

Rack-level overvoltage. Three complementary technologies answer different design questions:

  • Bourns® PV and ZVHT Series Metal Oxide Varistors for surge absorption at the rPDU input; selected PV Series models are UL 1449 recognized.
  • Bourns® PTVS2-xxxC-H Series Power TVS Diodes for tighter clamping on sensitive DC rails and supervisory electronics.
  • Bourns® IsoMOV® Hybrid Protectors, which pair an MOV with a gas discharge tube to reduce standby leakage where long service intervals matter.

Current sensing and overcurrent. Category 3 PUE reporting requires current measurement at each outlet. The Bourns® CSI2H-2512 Series Shunt offers 0.3 mΩ to 3.5 mΩ, tolerance options of ±1 %, ±2 %, and ±5 %, a TCR of ±50 ppm/°C, and low thermal EMF. For the Ethernet and USB ports used for remote supervision, Bourns® Multifuse® MF-NSMF Series PPTC Resettable Fuses open under fault and reset once the fault clears, so an outlet stays online without a site visit.
