FEATURED STORY

Bourns Opens Custom Magnetics
R&D Center in Göttingen, Germany

Geothermally heated facility in Rosdorf brings Bourns' 44-person custom magnetics engineering team under one roof, with a prototyping workshop and modern office space.

Bourns opened a new research, development, and design center for its custom magnetics operations in Rosdorf, in the Göttingen district of Lower Saxony, Germany, bringing its 44-person custom magnetics engineering, prototyping, and design team into a renovated 3,000-square-meter building. The team has worked at this site since Bourns acquired Kaschke Components in 2021, production of inductive components continues at Bourns' manufacturing sites in Tunisia. Bourns President and Chief Operating Officer Al Yost attended the facility's opening ceremony on July 9.

The center includes a prototype workshop with separate areas for measurement technology and qualification equipment, letting the engineering team move from concept to tested design without leaving the building. The facility occupies two floors of a renovated steel-and-concrete building, with 17 offices, two meeting rooms, and a geothermal heating and cooling system built around 12 boreholes drilled 99 meters into the ground.

"Our custom magnetics engineers in Rosdorf know this work better than almost anyone in the industry — they've been at it for 70 years," said Brian Ahearne, Vice President, Products & Technology, Power Division, Bourns. "They have a prototype shop, qualification lab, and office space that makes it easy to stay focused. When your best people want to come into the office instead of working from home, you know you've gotten the workspace right."

CSS2H-5930 and CSI2H-5930 Series Current
Sense Resistors Add 0.1 mΩ Option

Bourns® added a 0.1 mΩ resistance value to the CSS2H-5930 and CSI2H-5930 Series current sense resistors. The surface-mount devices use an electron-beam-welded metal strip design and are rated for 15 W at 70 °C, with inductance below 3 nH (material type R) or below 5 nH (material type K), a temperature coefficient of ±275 ppm/°C, and an operating range of −55 °C to +170 °C. The CSS2H-5930 Series is AEC-Q200 compliant and automotive grade; both series are RoHS compliant and halogen free.

CFG-A Series Extends Wide Terminal Metal Foil
Resistors with Automotive Grade Models

Bourns released the CFG-A Series, extending the CFG family of wide terminal metal foil current sense resistors with automotive grade models for phase-current sensing in motor drive, on-board charger, and power management systems. The series is available in 0508 and 0612 footprints, with power ratings up to 2 W and resistance values from 1 mΩ to 40 mΩ, and supports an operating range of −55 °C to +155 °C. The wide terminal configuration reduces parasitic resistance and spreads heat into the PCB for accurate sensing in high-current designs. The CFG-A Series is AEC-Q200 compliant, RoHS compliant, and halogen free.

PER40 Ring Encoder and PEC11S Series Shaft-Length Expansion Add Rotational Input Options

Bourns released the Model PER40, a 22 mm low-profile incremental ring encoder with 2-phase quadrature output for rotational control: 15 pulses per 360° rotation, 30 haptic detents, continuous electrical travel, and a rotational life of 30,000 cycles, operating from 3.3 VDC to 5 VDC across −40 °C to +85 °C.

Bourns also expanded the PEC11S Series, a 12 mm surface-mount incremental encoder with 2-bit quadrature output and metal shaft and bushing construction, with a new 25 mm shaft length option available in switched and switchless configurations. The series is rated for a minimum rotational life of 15,000 cycles, 100 gf·cm detent torque, and an operating range of −40 °C to +70 °C, at speeds up to 60 RPM.

PDB182-GTRB Series Blend-Balance Guitar
Potentiometers Expand to 10 kΩ–1 MΩ

Bourns expanded the standard resistance values for the PDB182-GTRB Series 17 mm blend-balance guitar potentiometers to a range of 10 kΩ to 1 MΩ, adding options for tone shaping, signal blending, and balance control on the same mechanical platform. The dual-gang, center-detent potentiometer is rated for 0.06 W (dual section), ±20 % resistance tolerance, an operating range of −10 °C to +50 °C, and 15,000 rotational life cycles, with standard M and N taper across the full resistance range. Because the new values share the mechanical envelope and mounting dimensions of existing PDB182-GTRB configurations, designers can evaluate them in current PCB layouts and enclosures without additional qualification of fit or form.

APPLICATION ENGINEERING

Magnetics for GaN-Based Single-Phase Cycloconverters

Specifying magnetics for a GaN-based single-phase cycloconverter means designing to a controlled leakage inductance the topology uses for zero-voltage switching, rather than minimizing leakage as in conventional resonant designs. This application note covers how the MAG-3002176 Transformer and MAG-3002177 Inductor, available as engineering samples ahead of general production, were developed for the Texas Instruments TIDA-010954 reference design, a 600 W bidirectional single-stage DC-AC converter for solar micro-inverters and battery energy storage systems, including primary and leakage inductance, DCR, Hi-Pot ratings, and inductance stability under DC bias to 20 A.
