Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

This past fall, members of the Bowling Green City School district began a district initiative to help tell the entire story of BGCS. This initiative was to create the district’s first ever Quality Profile (QP). The QP is our way to capture a more complete picture of our district’s strengths and comprehensive services. The QP highlights six areas of our district. These areas include: Academics, the Arts, Student Leadership & Activities, Fiscal Stewardship, Parent & Community Involvement, and Student Services. The information included is inclusive of the entire district, PK-12, and from all departments and areas.

For decades the Ohio Department of Education has released a State Report Card for Ohio’s school districts. This report is based, in large part, on a series of single day assessments of students. The state assessments and reports are one important indicator of student progress, but there is no single measure that can accurately capture and report all that is accomplished in Bowling Green City Schools. (BGCS earned 4.5 out of 5 stars on the most recent State Report Card!) A Quality Profile provides a more complete picture than what a State Report Card can provide.

We are very excited to have produced the district’s first edition of Bowling Green City Schools’ Quality Profile. Please click HERE to view!

I am honored to serve the students, families, community, and staff of Bowling Green City Schools. I promise that our District will work hard to improve each day to provide a high-quality education for our students, a financially sound organization for our stakeholders, and be a point of pride for the entire community.

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

Exploring Big Dreams at Kenwood’s Career Day

Kenwood Elementary was buzzing with excitement as students in every hallway eagerly welcomed special guests for the school’s annual Career Day. Organized by first grade teacher Mrs. Carrie Reynolds, this special event gave students a firsthand look into the world of work—and a glimpse of what they might want to be when they grow up.

Classrooms were transformed into mini career showcases, as professionals from a wide range of fields visited to share their stories, tools of the trade, and personal journeys. This year’s Career Day featured an impressive lineup of careers, including a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Dental Hygienist, Optometrist, Aviation professional, Firefighter/EMT, Nurse, Hair Stylist, Teacher, and a Fitness and Wellness Coordinator.

Students listened with wide eyes and curious minds as each guest explained what they do in their daily jobs. From learning how firefighters use their gear to seeing the instruments used by an optometrist, students got hands-on experiences that brought each profession to life. They asked thoughtful questions, tried out tools, and saw real-life pictures of professionals in action.

But Career Day was about more than just what adults do—it was about inspiring dreams. Each speaker shared the path they took to get where they are today, talked about the education or training involved, and encouraged students to explore their own interests and passions.

We extend our thanks to all of the guest speakers who took the time to engage with our students and open their eyes to the many possibilities that await them.

Optometrist Dr. Jacoby demonstrated how he uses a special light to examine patients' eyes and explained what he looks for during an eye exam, discussed various eye conditions, and tips for protecting their eyes.

BGFD Firefighter/EMTs Ryan and Rob spoke with students about the various emergency situations they respond to and gave an up-close look at the life-saving equipment they use on the job.

Brandy, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, gave students a close-up look at red blood cells, platelets, and more through a microscope, while also showcasing a variety of lab tools and testing equipment used in medical diagnostics.

Cindy, a nurse, shared what it's like to work in healthcare and gave students a hands-on look at some of the tools and equipment she uses to care for patients.

Andrew and AJ, from the BGSU School of Aviation, gave students an exciting look into careers in the aviation industry, sharing how pilots and aviation professionals take to the skies.

Haley spoke with students about what it takes to become a teacher and shared the many important roles teachers play in helping students learn and grow.

Trisha introduced students to exciting career opportunities in cosmetology, highlighting skills in hair styling, skincare, nail care, and more.

Karyn and Julia shared insights about their careers in recreation and wellness at BGSU, highlighting how they help people stay active, healthy, and engaged through fitness and well-being programs.

Kelley, a dental hygienist, shared examples of what she does for her job, explained the training required for her career, and taught students the importance of keeping their teeth clean and healthy.

BGHS Art Club Collaborates with Individuals Served by WCBDD for Community Art Show

Art can be a way to express creativity, ideas, and emotions while being a source of inspiration for people of all abilities. In celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, members of the Bowling Green High School Art Club teamed up with individuals served by the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD). Over the last several months, our art teachers and art club students demonstrated various art techniques and mentored the individuals as they created their own unique and meaningful works of art during the monthly art club meetings. They’ve been working on projects that will be showcased in a Community Art Show Competition hosted by WCBDD on March 28 from 5:00–6:30 p.m. at the Bowling Green Community Center. It is free and open to the public! It will feature artwork by individuals who are served by WCBDD, as well as 6th-8th grade students from local schools and those in recreational art programs.

BGHS National Honor Society Welcomes New Inductees

Earlier this week, Bowling Green High School proudly celebrated the induction of new members into the National Honor Society (NHS)—a prestigious recognition of students who exemplify excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

During the ceremony, NHS officers spoke about the importance of each of these four pillars and how they shape not only outstanding students, but responsible citizens and future leaders. We were also honored to welcome Mr. Shawn Hudson as the evening’s guest speaker. Their words served as both a celebration of achievement and a call to continue living out these values in school and beyond.

Congratulations to all of our newly inducted NHS members! Your hard work, leadership, and commitment to serving others make us incredibly proud. We look forward to seeing the positive influence you will continue to have on our school and community.
