News from Bowling Green City Schools

Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

Last November, Bowling Green City Schools had an operating levy on the ballot to fund the day-to-day operations of the district. The 0.75% traditional income tax levy for a continuing period of time was defeated by 108 votes (7,174 votes for and 7,282 votes against). In order to continue funding the current operations of the district, the need for additional funds has not gone away. To maintain a balanced budget one of two actions needs to take place: increase revenue (pass a levy) or major budget reductions (staff and program eliminations/reductions).

The Board of Education voted in December to place another operating levy on the May 6, 2025 ballot to fund the district’s day-to-day operations. May’s levy is a 0.75% traditional income tax for a five (5) year period. At this past Tuesday’s Regular February Board of Education meeting, the board approved a budget reductions plan that will be implemented next school year should the May 6, 2025 levy be unsuccessful. Here is a link to the presentation I gave regarding the levy and potential budget reductions should the levy be unsuccessful: How do you want your school district to look?

The district will continue to provide information regarding the upcoming levy as Election Day nears.

I am honored to serve the students, families, community, and staff of Bowling Green City Schools. I promise that our District will work hard to improve each day to provide a high-quality education for our students, a financially sound organization for our stakeholders, and be a point of pride for the entire community.

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

Celebrating National FFA Week

Happy National FFA week to our Penta-BGHS FFA students and their teacher, Mrs. Conway! This is a time to recognize and celebrate the impact of agricultural education! FFA prepares students for leadership and careers in the science, business, and technology of agriculture. Through hands-on learning, leadership training, and competitive events, FFA members gain valuable skills in areas such as agricultural science, mechanics, and entrepreneurship. FFA fosters personal growth, career success, and a commitment to community service.

Our FFA students do incredibly well at county, district, and state competitions and receive national recognition! This year, we had two American Degree recipients, Madison Carrillo and Edison Eschedor! This is the highest degree a member can earn and less than 1% earn this degree! Three of our FFA officers Casey Naus (Reporter), Clare Tussing (Secretary) and Annie Urban (Treasurer) earned gold ratings and will walk across the stage to be recognized at the FFA State Convention in April! This year, there were 29 second year members who received the highest degree a chapter can bestow! There were also 51 Greenhand Degree members initiated as new members of the FFA this year!

Our Ag Sales team (Gavin, Shawn, Casey, Addie, and Annie) recently placed sixth at the district contest. Aidan placed first in the District Public Speaking Career Development Event (CDE) and will be competing at the state competition on March 1! Earlier this year, Grace placed eighth in the State Job Interview CDE and Annie, Izzy and Kylah placed first in the District Soils CDE and competed at the state level! These are just a few of their accomplishments this year! Students are also preparing for the Greenhand Quiz CDE, General Livestock/Equine/Poultry CDE tests, District 1 Spring CDEs, District 1 Ag Mechanics/Outdoor Power CDEs, and the Vet Science CDE. They are also planning for their end of the year FFA Banquet, 4th Grade Ag Fest, and the State FFA Convention!

FFA BOBCAT-A-THON:

February 22 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the BGHS Gym

Open to BGHS Students

Tickets: $10

The students have been hard at work planning for their annual Bobcat-A-Thon fundraiser. The proceeds go to Nationwide Children's Hospital - Toledo. It is a four-hour "party with a purpose" where students participate in fun activities such as a dodge ball tournament, capture the flag, dancing, crafts, relay races, yard games, and more! They will also hear stories about miracle kids from the hospital. Students at the event stay on their feet the whole time in solidarity for those kids who can't because they're sick and in a hospital bed.

The total amount raised from the Tailgate event (held in the fall) and the Bobcat-a-thon will be announced at the end of the Bobcat-A-Thon event!

Did you know? Last year, the BGHS FFA Chapter raised $7,278.11 for Nationwide Children’s Hospital through their Tailgate event and Bobcat-A-Thon, contributing to a total of $86,593.46 raised since 2004. Let's make this year's Bobcat-A-Thon their best year yet!
