Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

Winter break is coming to a close, and I hope our students, families, and staff had a restful and enjoyable time with loved ones. We’re excited to welcome everyone back to school as we enter the new year! Please note that there is a staff professional development day on Monday, January 6 which means no students will be in attendance. Students return to school on Tuesday, January 7.

Let’s embrace the opportunities ahead with renewed energy and focus, ready to make this semester one of growth, learning, and achievement. We look forward to seeing everyone back in class and kicking off a great start to 2025!

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

FAFSA® Completion Night January 13:

Unlock Financial Aid Opportunities

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) is essential for students planning to attend college. But did you know it’s not just for those seeking federal student loans?

Completing the FAFSA can open doors to scholarships, grants, and work-study funding—money you don’t have to pay back. Additionally, some private scholarships require a completed FAFSA as part of their application process.

To assist families, the high school is hosting a FAFSA Completion Night on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM in the High School Library. Representatives from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) will be on hand to guide parents and students through the FAFSA process for the 2025–26 award year (covering July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026).

What to Do Before Attending:

  1. Create a StudentAid.gov Account: Both the student and at least one parent should create accounts several days before attending. Start your FAFSA journey by creating an ID here: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.
  2. Gather Required Documents: Bring tax returns, child support records, account balances, and net worth of any investments, businesses, or farms.
  3. Know Your FAFSA Parent: Use the online wizard to identify which parent(s) need to be listed as contributors on the form (https://studentaid.gov/fafsa-apply/parents).
  4. Prepare Student and Contributor Information: Ensure you have Social Security numbers (if available), dates of birth, and mailing addresses.

College Credit Plus Information Night January 22

The State of Ohio requires that any middle school or high school students who are currently in grades 6-11 and are interested in taking college courses during the 2025-2026 school year, must attend a College Credit Plus meeting with a parent/guardian each year. It is required even if your student has participated in CCP courses in the past and whether the CCP courses are offered at the high school, on a college campus, or online.

The College Credit Plus (CCP) information night for Bowling Green City Schools is on January 22. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will start at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

Ohio’s College Credit Plus can help college-ready students earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses from community colleges or universities. There is no cost for tuition, books or fees. For more information about Ohio's College Credit Plus Program, click here.

Snapshots of Success:

Highlights from Around the District

Here are a few photos of some highlights from around the district over the past few weeks.

On Tuesday, five juniors from Bowling Green High School will travel to Rock Creek Curling in Lafayette, Colorado, to compete in the USA U18 National Curling Championships, which will take place from January 8-12, 2025. The team, known as Team Stygles, is part of the Bowling Green Curling Club and consists of Robert Stygles, Lyndon Stygles, Mark Boyle, Joey Height, and Alex Nelson. They qualified for nationals by winning the Great Lakes Curling Association's U18 Division competition at the Detroit Curling Club. They have been curling for five years and competing together for three years. Of note is that it is almost unheard of to have the whole team be from the same grade and the same school competing at the national level. Typically teams consist of people of different ages, different schools and even from different states! Good luck and good curling to the team as they compete next week! For more information about the U18 National Championships, click here.

Congratulations to Bowling Green Bobcat Hockey on their win over St. John's and congratulations to Rhett Winger for recording his 200th career point! Check out this story on BCSN!

Mia Buff broke the school record in the 100 backstroke in prelims of the NW Classic and then broke her school record in the 100 back again during finals while also breaking the meet record! Mia was recently featured in a Toledo Blade article about her future plans for collegiate swimming!

On December 14th, the BGHS Quiz Bowl team competed in the league tournament as the 11th seed in a competitive field of 25 teams. They finished in 7th place—their best finish ever!

Decisive victories over Ottoville (190-55), Leipsic (295-50), and Hicksville (235-145) showcased their talent, teamwork, and determination. We are proud of their hard work and success!

BGHS will host a Quiz Bowl tournament on January 18th and will compete in the annual "Trash" pop culture tournament in February to close out the year.

The BGHS wrestling team placed 18th out of 51 teams at The Defiance Tri-State Border War. Placing for the Bobcats: 5th - Cohen Lewis & Tommy Zemaitis and 7th - Landon Deiter. Also winning matches: Dajon Fields, Owen Laporte, Noah Quintero, Hunter Haas, & Owen Rath. Winning matches at AW: Arianna Hackworth, Walker Hindley, Carsen Rath, & Jamison Horst. Come out & support them at their HOME meet on January 8th for Senior Night / Glow-Night!
