Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

Today’s edition of the Bowling Green City Schools e-newsletter is full of the wonderful activities our students have participated in over the last few weeks. These activities, and all the activities the district provides to our students throughout the year, are very important to our student’s overall growth and development. Unfortunately, I want to point out, many of these activities are the same activities that must be eliminated should the May 6 levy not pass. Please take time to understand what is at stake with the upcoming levy. To see the information the district has shared about the levy, please click HERE.

I am honored to serve the students, families, community, and staff of Bowling Green City Schools. I promise that our District will work hard to improve each day to provide a high-quality education for our students, a financially sound organization for our stakeholders, and be a point of pride for the entire community.

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

Two BGHS Seniors Honored at 30th Annual Achievement of Excellence Awards

Bowling Green High School seniors Lucille Nomaguchi-Long and Samuel Challu were recently recognized at the 30th Annual Achievement of Excellence Awards, hosted by the Wood County Educational Service Center at Penta Career Center. This prestigious event honors two seniors from each Wood County school district for their academic excellence, leadership, and community impact. Each honoree also had the opportunity to recognize a staff member who made a meaningful difference in their journey.

Lucille Nomaguchi-Long, BGHS Class of 2025 Valedictorian, is a standout scholar, leader, and athlete. A National Merit Semi-Finalist, Presidential Scholar Program candidate by the US Department of Education, and AP Scholar with Distinction, Lucy is president of both Model UN and the Class of 2025, and is a member of National Honor Society and National French Honor Society. Lucy has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Delegate, Distinguished Delegate and Best Delegate in competitions at major Model UN conferences held at Harvard, the University of Chicago, Ohio State, and the University of Dayton.

Outside the classroom, Lucy works as a figure skating coach and is a Double National Gold Medalist in Senior Gold Moves and Gold Ladies Singles. She contributes to academic research as a life sciences research assistant at BGSU, where she studies molecular biology alongside undergraduate and graduate students. Lucy also mentors two Japanese elementary students through the BGCS Mentoring Program. With a 4.5 GPA, 35 ACT, and 1580 SAT, she plans to attend Harvard University to study Molecular Biology and possibly Government, with aspirations of minoring in art.

Lucy honored Mrs. Mary Kern, her French teacher and Model UN advisor:

Madame Kern demonstrates constant support of academics and devotes countless hours and energy to her students. She played a central role in my growth throughout high school. Without her, I would have never joined Model UN or discovered my passion for international issues and diplomacy. Madame Kern is always encouraging and positively challenging her students.

Samuel Challu, BGHS Class of 2025 Salutatorian, is equally accomplished. He has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, National Hispanic Recognition Award recipient, and was nominated for the Franklin B. Walters Scholarship and the National Rural and Small Town Recognition program. He is president of National Honor Society, treasurer of Model UN, co-president of Spanish Club, secretary of the peer tutoring club, and a section leader in the high school orchestra. Sam is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, has studied abroad in Spain, and earned the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish. Sam is also a research participant in BGSU’s photochemical sciences department as part of the PICNICS program. He has earned awards at national Model UN conferences—including Harvard and Chicago—and organized cultural and community events with Spanish Club and Orchestra.

Sam plans to study physics and engineering at either Brown or Johns Hopkins University. He recognized Mrs. Kathy Hershberger, BGHS guidance office secretary:

Although I was asked to bring a faculty member to this event, in bringing Mrs. Hershberger, our guidance office secretary, I hope to highlight the invaluable relationships students build with staff members who often work behind the scenes," Sam said. "As a volunteer in the guidance office, I’ve had the privilege to receive her insightful feedback on applications, college choices, and life in general, all while witnessing her eagerness to do the same for each student who steps through the door. As I advance into my future, I will never forget her impact on me as a mentor, but especially as a friend.”

Congratulations to Lucy and Sam on their outstanding achievements, and a special thank you to Mrs. Kern and Mrs. Hershberger for the lasting impact they’ve made on our students’ lives.

Learning Beyond the Classroom:

Vocational Training in Action

Each week, students in the Bowling Green High School Learning Center are stepping out of the classroom and into the community as part of a vocational training program. This initiative gives students the opportunity to build job readiness and life skills while working alongside professionals in real-world settings.

Currently, students are gaining hands-on experience at Evans Insurance and in the Wood County Committee on Aging kitchen. At Evans Insurance, students are developing office skills such as labeling, stamping, assembling folders, and shredding documents. In the kitchen, students assist with meal preparation and packaging, helping to serve older adults throughout the community.

These opportunities help students strengthen their communication, teamwork, and organizational skills—essential tools for future employment. The students enjoy the work and take pride in contributing to the local community.

BGHS is grateful to both Evans Insurance and the Wood County Committee on Aging for their continued support and for helping prepare students for success beyond high school.

Congratulations to the cast, crew, orchestra, & production team of the BGHS Musical All Shook Up!
