News from Bowling Green City Schools

November 22, 2024

Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

Bowling Green City Schools had a 0.75% income tax levy on the November 5, 2024 ballot to fund the day-to-day operations of the school district. After the provisional votes were counted, it was determined the levy was defeated with 49.63% for the levy and 50.37% against the levy. Thank you to everyone who cast a vote on the issue.

As was stated during the weeks leading up to Election Day, the need for additional funding to continue district operations has not gone away based on this outcome of the election. In order to balance the district’s budget, one of two actions must occur— increase revenue (passage of a levy) or reduce expenditures (major staffing and programing cuts).

The Bowling Green City Schools Board of Education will be reviewing the levy outcome in the coming weeks. I anticipate a levy request will be on the ballot in the spring of 2025. Along with the levy request, the Board of Education will approve a specific list of district reductions that will need to take place should the spring of 2025 levy request be unsuccessful. With the amount of funding needed to continue the current day-to-day operations of the district, I anticipate the list to be extensive. The positive to this situation is you, our community, will have the ultimate and final decision of how our school district will look moving into the 2025-2026 school year.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to either Treasurer Matt Feasel or myself to discuss this further.

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

BGCS Honors Our Veterans

Students, staff, and the entire school community took time to recognize the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country during Veterans Day assemblies. These assemblies gave students the chance to express their gratitude, listen to stories of service, and reflect on the importance of our freedoms. They also presented the ceremonial $3179.26 check from the district's Hometown Heroes Penny War to a representative of the BGSF for the Hometown Heroes Banner program.

Bowling Green City Schools Celebrate PBIS Bronze Award Recognition!

We are proud to announce that all Bowling Green City Schools have earned the Bronze Award for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce!

This achievement highlights our district's commitment to creating a positive, consistent, and supportive learning environment for all students.

PBIS is more than just a set of policies—it's a proactive, research-based framework designed to help schools foster positive behaviors, build students’ confidence, and address challenges before they become disruptions. By focusing on each student's strengths, PBIS reduces disciplinary actions such as suspensions and office referrals, ensuring students spend more time engaged in learning. Educators also gain more teaching time, which translates to better academic and social outcomes for everyone.

What is PBIS?

PBIS emphasizes a systematic approach to improving academic, social, and behavioral outcomes through four integrated elements:

  • Data for decision-making: Using evidence to guide strategies and track progress.
  • Evidence-based interventions: Supporting diverse student needs with a multi-tiered approach.
  • Efficient systems: Implementing and sustaining these practices effectively.
  • Continual monitoring: Ensuring outcomes are being met and practices are refined as needed.

The framework isn't a one-time solution; it's an ongoing process of growth and collaboration involving educators, students, and families. It dismantles barriers to learning and creates a safe and inclusive school environment.

Why PBIS Matters

PBIS helps students succeed by reducing disruptions and enhancing school culture. The approach benefits everyone:

  • For students: It builds confidence, fosters positive relationships, and maximizes instructional time.
  • For educators: It provides tools to address behaviors proactively, improving morale and efficiency.
  • For families: Collaboration between schools and families strengthens support systems, enhancing outcomes for children.

The Path to Recognition

The Bronze Award reflects the hard work and dedication of our educators, staff, students, and families. This recognition celebrates the quality and fidelity of PBIS implementation across all Bowling Green schools. Schools receiving this award have demonstrated a strong foundation for supporting students academically, socially, and behaviorally.

Moving Forward Together

This recognition is just the beginning! As a district, we remain committed to fostering a culture of growth and success. PBIS plays a critical role in ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive. When families and schools work together, we create an environment where children can achieve their fullest potential.

Let’s celebrate this achievement and continue building on our success! Congratulations to the entire Bowling Green City Schools community on this well-deserved honor!

Two BGHS Theatre Students Earn Superior Ratings at Competition and Qualify for International Competition.

We are proud to announce that two of our talented BGHS Theatre students earned SUPERIOR ratings at the prestigious Thespys (International Theatre Excellence Award) Competition held at Olentangy Liberty High School!
