What a great time to be a Cougar! This month, we celebrated Homecoming and it was so good to see our alumni return to campus and students enjoy all of the fun traditions of Spirit Week. It has been a busy start to the school year. Enjoy this issue of the Cougar News for glimpses of life at Charlotte Catholic.
As you may have heard, CCHS is shifting to the President-Principal model of governance. I am honored to have accepted the role of President and will transition to this position next summer. The Catholic Schools Office has enlisted a search committee to conduct a search for the next Principal. You may read more about this change here: President-Principal.

The Class of 2026 participated in Freshmen retreat September 14 and 162. Classmates were given the opportunity to celebrate Mass, engage with speakers, play games and get to know one another. | |
National Merit Scholars
Seven CCHS seniors were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Joseph Baisley, Kara Bivens, Michael Egan, Jackson Fitzpatrick, Abigail Hahn, Laura Horne, Christopher Moniz-Johnson and Kevin O'Brien.

Renovated classrooms for the Options Program were dedicated and blessed October 10 by Fr. Timothy Reid, Vicar of Education. | |
Presidential Service Award Winners Honored
After Mass on October 27, CCHS honored 55 students who have been recognized as recipients of the President's Volunteer Service Award. This award honors those whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action.

CCHS Clubs offer Something for Everyone | |
Club Day was held Wednesday, September 14 after school. Club Day offers students opportunities for explore various club offerings from service to sports, games and hobbies, to Catholic worship...there is a club to fit the interests of every student! Best Buddies Buddy Walk
The CCHS Best Buddies Club participated in the Greater Charlotte Buddy Walk October 15. The CCHS team, Love Builds Champions, raised more than $2,000 for Best Buddies.

Rho Kappa Supports CMPD
The Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society hosted a drive for the CMPD South Division, collecting basic supplies to help support our local officers.

Debut Performances in Fine Arts Center | |
The CCHS Choirs and Bands held their fall concerts October 11 and 13. Mr. John Shusdock directs the choirs, and Mr. Jacob Bohan directs the bands. | |
CCHS theatre presented Journeys, an original drama: October 20-22 at CCHS. The play was directed by Mr. Marcus Riter. | |
On September 28, CCHS students heard from Mrs. Theresa Payton, current CCHS parent and global cyber security expert, on important and relevant digital citizenship topics including identity, online reputation, digital footprint and cyberbullying. | |
On October 21, Super Bowl champion Mr. Matt Birk, a six-time NFL Pro Bowl Selection and Harvard graduate, spoke to students on how he keeps his Catholic faith front and center in his life. | |
Future Cougars Visit Campus | |
Students from area Catholic schools recently had a glimpse of a day at CCHS. Eighth graders from HTCMS were welcomed by CCHS students ambassadors and faculty on Friday, October 14 for morning tours and lunch. Fifth graders from St. Matthew visited the stadium Thursday, October 20 as part of their rocket build and launch project. | |
Spirit Week and Homecoming 2022 | |
Spirit Week was held September 26-30 at Charlotte Catholic. The week's festivities included themed "dress-down" days and culminated with a pep rally and crowning of the homecoming queen. | |
During the pep rally, senior football players joined the dance team for a fun performance. | |
The "hype squad" keeps spirits going and students cheering at pep rallies and school events. | |
The 2022 Homecoming Queen was Ana Palomino. She was joined with fellow seniors on the homecoming court: Riley Wooton, Leah Albritton, Bella Nalitz and Katie Redican. The court also included juniors Summer Basrawala and Emily Burnett, sophomores Maggie Kernodle and Lucy McArdle and freshmen Julia Caldwell and Felicity Foley. | |

Welcome Home, Cougar Alumni | |
CCHS Alumni and their legacy children attended the Alumni & Legacy lunch and Lunch Events at CCHS September 29. The breakfast, cancelled this year to to school closing for incoming Hurricane Ian, will be back in 2023. | |

An Alumni Mass was celebrated by Msgr. McSweeney on Sunday, October 2, and Principal Telford hosted a tour of the new Fine Arts Center following Mass. | |

An Evening with Dr. Monroe
CCHS Welcomed Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Monroe to address MACS parents in a presentation October 25. Dr. Monroe joined Principal Telford, parents and alumni in the community at a reception following his presentation.

Together for Catholic
Thank you to all who have given already to this year's Together for Catholic Annual Fund. Your support makes so much possible for students and teachers at Charlotte Catholic.

The PTO Hosted a reception following the second annual Moms' Mass, celebrated after the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy. Chaplain Fr. Sanchez celebrated the Mass on September 26.

The varsity football team is 8-2 heading into the playoffs this Friday, 11/4 where they travel to Reagan High School. The JV football team finished the season undefeated with a record of 9-0. | |
Varsity boys soccer is 12-7-1 and finished 2nd in the conference. They will play Southwest Guildford in the the playoffs on Monday, 10/31. The JV soccer team finished the season with a record of 8-3-3. | |
The field hockey team is 12-5 and finished 1st in the conference. They advance to the state semi-final game at Myers Park on Thursday 11/3. The JV field hockey team finished the season 6-2-2. | |
The girls golf team finished the season 8-2 and 1st in the conference. Senior Kate Dann represented CCHS in the state tournament, and was 3rd straight conference player of the year. | |
The girls tennis team finished the season 17-4 and 2nd in the conference. Juniors Charlotte Bergman and Caroline Nelson advanced to the state championship in doubles play last weekend. | |
The volleyball team finished the season 1st in the conference and with a record of 17-6. | |
The boys cross country team captured the 4A West Regional Championship. | |

CCHS moms Jamie Graham, Jenny Szany Duncan '92, Marisa Haehnlein, and tournament chair Tish Macuga played in the CCHS Athletics Boosters Tennis Tournament October 25. Nearly $5,000 was raised for the Boosters. | | |
