CDG Newsletter
3rd QUARTER 2016
The third quarter of 2016 was busy! CDG has continued doing work for various utility, infrastructure, mining and industrial clients, and we have recently added some new employees and said goodbye to an irreplaceable one.

We know it's been a while since you've heard from us, so b elow is a summary of what has been keeping the company busy over the last few months.
Substation Security Upgrades
Before the 2013 attack on the California substation outside of San Jose, the full threat of this kind of security breach wasn't at the forefront of most of our minds. However, considering that the large majority of the United States' electric infrastructure is located in open and remote areas, there is an obvious need to secure these facilities from individuals with the intention of committing a crime.

The NERC CIP-014 standards were designed with the goal of better protecting our most critical infrastructure. While this set of regulations is still fairly new, some of the standards are subject to interpretation by  owners and operators. However, it is anticipated that with time, changes and additions will help the NERC CIP-014 mature and get more prescriptive as the industry improves this area.

While we patiently await the maturity of the 2014 security standards, there are a few things CDG can do to you step up your security game. We have extensive experience working for large industrial and utility companies on civil site designs including the installation of walls and other security barriers, in addition to security camera set-up and positioning.

If you are interested in learning more about how CDG can help you make your facility more secure, visit us here.

The Drone Zone
CDG recently invested in an  Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), making our firm one of the first engineering firms in the country to be granted permission by the FAA to fly a drone for commercial purposes. Lyle Hardin, CDG's Design Technologies Manager and an Associate Principal, is a certified pilot who operates the DJI Phantom 3 Professional UAV when surveying hard to reach areas. The dynamic and flexible nature of such a system allows for surveying of transmission towers, smoke stacks, power lines, roof tops and bridges.

We believe that UAV surveys are part of the future of professional surveying, and we are excited for the opportunities the use of such a system will bring to the firm.

The Transition from Life of Leisure to Full Retirement

Goodbyes can be bittersweet, and that was certainly the case when we said goodbye to one of our irreplaceable employees.  The one and only, Mr. John P. Fillion, P.E. (the Only Juan) retired on June 9, 2016. While everyone at CDG is sad to see him go, we are very excited to hear about the adventures to come during his retirement on the farm.

Throughout his time with CDG, John was a Principal and Project Manager/Senior Civil Engineer. He had 25+ years of corporate and consulting engineer experience on some of the largest coal mining, handling and energy related projects ever constructed in the U.S.

Juan will be missed by everyone at CDG.

Welcome New Employees
CDG's expanding workload means a growing technical staff. Three new employees have joined the firm's team since the First Quarter.
Welcome Zack Beale, Mary Reiss and Dave Smaldone!

Zack is CDG's newest Mechanical Engineer.  He worked at CDG as an intern for a short time and then joined the full time staff after graduating from Mizzou in the spring of 2016.

Mary joined the Marketing Department in March as the new Marketing Coordinator. She joins CDG with 5 years of experience.

Dave Smaldone is a marketing consultant for CDG after many years working for various utility and mining companies in the West.

Additionally, we neglected to mention in our previous Newsletter the addition of John Merle to our mechanical department. He is actually returning to CDG after a few years' absence.
Healthy Lifestyle Competition
Workplace wellness competitions challenge employees to engage in activities that will make them happier, healthier and more energetic. At CDG, our Healthy Lifestyle Competition is a supportive, fun way to build camaraderie and help our people adopt, or maintain, a healthy way of living. Participants were rewarded based on their achievements. This year there were four gold medalists, but Charita Bingham  achieved the greatest results and ultimately took home the first place prize. Congratulations to everyone who participated!
