CIHS 30 Year Anniversary Series
Big Picture Perspectives for Planetary Flourishing: Metatheory for the Anthropocene

We are looking forward to hosting CIHS Professors, Dr. Sean Esbjorn-Hargens and Dr. Nicholas Hedlund as part of our 30 Year Anniversary series, to discuss their upcoming new book. Dr. Thomas Brophy, CIHS President, will moderate the discussion, with time for Q&A at the end.

This book, split across two volumes, is a follow-up and companion to Metatheory for the Twenty-First Century (Routledge, 2016). All three of these volumes are the dialogical outcome of a multi-year symposia series wherein critical realists and integral theorists deeply engaged each other and their distinct but complementary approaches to integrative metatheory. Whereas Metatheory for the Twenty-First Century is primarily theoretical in its focus, Big Picture Perspectives for Planetary Flourishing: Metatheory for the Anthropocene aims to more concretely and practically address the complex planetary crises of a new era that many scholars now refer to as ‘the Anthropocene.’

In this first of two new volumes, participants of the symposia series articulate a variety of ‘big picture perspectives’ and transformative interventions in the domains of society and economics, social psychology, and education. Together, these chapters demonstrate how integrative metatheory and its application can make powerful contributions to planetary flourishing in the Anthropocene.

With one of the defining characteristics of the Anthropocene being the sheer complexity and multi-valent nature of our interconnected global challenges, these volumes crucially present new forms of scholarship that can adequately weave together insights from multiple disciplines into new forms of metapraxis. As such, this book will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners in the areas of philosophy, social theory, critical realism, integral studies, metamodernism, and current affairs generally.

Introducing CIHS Student Advisory Senate Leaders
Chris Orrey: MA-PhD student, INS
Student Advisory Senate Co-Leader

Chris Orrey is soon beginning her eighth quarter at CIHS and absolutely loves her experience thus far. She is on the MA-PhD track in the Integral Noetic Sciences program. Chris lives in San Francisco, California with her wife and pets. She is a retired police lieutenant who has a vision of transforming the policing profession through her studies at CIHS. When not engaged in academic or spiritual pursuits, she is often traveling with her wife, working out on her Peloton, or having her weekly “Jay Day” with her six-year-old grandson. Her background is eclectic, being an ordained minister (A Course in Miracles), a blackbelt in Kajukenbo karate, a high ropes course facilitator, and a collector of autographed books. Her police career included commanding the crisis negotiation team, creating a critical incident stress management program, and having expertise in child abuse and intimate partner violence. Her Command College thesis was on the effect of sub-conscious biases in police decision-making. Chris was drawn to CIHS because of its emphasis on science and spirituality and has become an absolute integral theory nerd. Feel free to reach out to her any time. Her email is [email protected]
Lauren Hickey: MA-PhD student, IH
Student Advisory Senate Co-Leader

Lauren Hickey is a third-year PhD student in the Integral Health - Life Physics program where she is exploring her interests in altered states of consciousness and the dynamic interaction between consciousness and subtle energy in built spaces and the natural world. She holds a Master of Divinity and is a Kundalini yoga teacher, Reiki master, and Environmental Consultant. Lauren currently lives on the eastern shore of Maryland with her partner Kyle. She can be contacted at [email protected].
