Water Transportation Jobs Growing in Mississippi
Water transportation (NAICS 483), which includes water transportation of passengers and cargo using watercraft, such as ships, barges, and boats, grew 29% in Mississippi over the last five years increasing from 868 to 1,121, according to EMSI data. There are 21 Mississippi companies in this industry including Pan-isles Inc., United Pioneer, Air Ocean Intl Shipping, and Ocean Air Shipping. The state is expected to grow at a faster rate than the nation in this sector. The main occupations in this sector include captains, mates, and pilots as well as sailors and marine oilers. The average salary is $90,948 versus the national average of $105,720.
The main industries being served are petroleum refineries, freight transportation arrangements, and solid waste collection. Much of this growth is driven by inland water transportation in Mississippi which has experienced a 28.9% growth versus the national growth of 11.7%. An analysis of the education pipeline shows that Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has the only preparatory program for these occupations, but no degree awards for the current 71 openings.
