Bill Silveira Scholarship Applications Due September 14

As each year passes, more and more people realize that impact that William “Bill” Silveira had on the California Pork Producers Association (CPPA). A visionary, Bill poured his heart and soul into making CPPA Work for pork producers. Bill believed in young people and knew providing them opportunities would pay dividends well into the future. The Silveira Scholarship Fund was established to help cultivate future CPPA and agriculture industry leaders.

The Silveira family has helped CPPA present hard working and dedicated pork producers who are pursuing a college education with financial assistance. The award will be given to the most qualified recipient and awarded at CPPA's Annual Meeting in December.

CPPA Represented at US SHIP House of Delegates Meeting

CPPA was represented at the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) House of Delegates meeting last week. The gathering brought together leaders from across the country to discuss swine health priorities, traceability, and biosecurity measures to strengthen the U.S. pork industry.

Key topics included:

  • PEDv Eradication Efforts: With low seasonal cases reported and promising eradication roadmaps, industry leaders emphasized the need for a modified live vaccine to reduce shedding and outlined voluntary PEDv clean certification protocols for breeding stock.
  • National Swine Traceability: With over one million pigs transported daily, SHIP leaders stressed the importance of AgView and other traceability tools to build trust with trading partners.
  • Producer Engagement & Communication: Lessons from NPIP highlighted how regular testing, communication, and producer involvement can lead to stronger programs and even federal support during outbreaks.
  • Breakout Sessions: Discussions ranged from feed biosafety (with calls for broader mill participation) to enhanced biosecurity planning for exhibition swine—encouraging proactive, everyday practices and youth engagement through programs like 4-H and FFA.

Juniors Attend NJSA's National Youth Leadership Conference

Blog by: Jenna Freitas, Junior Director

This July, CPPA sponsored a group of Junior Directors to attend the National Junior Swine Association’s (NJSA) Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC) in St. Louis, Missouri.

NYLC was created to give youth from across the country opportunities to strengthen their leadership, network with industry professionals, and gain firsthand knowledge of the pork industry. Over three action-packed days, attendees toured facilities such as Heimer Hampshires, The Maschhoffs, and the new St. Louis Airport import/export hub — each experience provided insights into both the commercial and showpig sides of our industry.
