The BOCC received a COVID-19 update from Calvert County Health Officer Dr. Laurence Polsky during the March 23 board meeting.
Dr. Polsky, who directs the local health department as an agent of Maryland State Government, provided updates to the BOCC on testing, positivity rates and vaccination efforts in Calvert County.

PREREGISTER FOR THE COVID-19 VACCINE ONLINE
Calvert County residents age 18 and older who wish to receive a COVID-19 vaccination may preregister online.
PREREGISTER OVER THE PHONE
A call center is also available to assist Calvert County residents who wish to preregister for the vaccination over the phone. For assistance, residents may call 410-535-0218, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
When doses become available, an invitation to schedule an appointment will be emailed to you. Be sure to keep an eye on your spam or junk mail folders to ensure you see it right away.
Residents are reminded not to share appointment scheduling links and to keep in mind that if you share your link, you are taking a vaccine away from someone else and may be turned away. You may visit the COVID-19 virtual resource center for answers to frequently asked questions. Please contact your primary care physician for any health questions related to the vaccine.
Visit Maryland's vaccine portal to locate additional vaccine clinics near you. If you are vaccinated through one of these clinics, please remove your name from the Calvert County Government preregistry by calling 410-535-0218.

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners recently activated the county’s new public safety communications system. The new 800-megahertz P25 digital communications system replaces the county’s 25-year-old system to provide enhanced radio coverage and interoperability for the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, fire departments, rescue squads and county government agencies.
“The vital importance of radio communications for emergency personnel cannot be overstated,” said BOCC President Earl F. “Buddy” Hance. “This system will provide a new level of safety and service that our citizens and first responders deserve.”
Public Safety Director Jackie Vaughan added, “The old system has served us well, but we are excited for the increased coverage and capabilities that the new system provides. The technology is protected against obsolescence so we can expect this new system to serve the needs of our citizens and first responders for the next 20 years.”
The new system provides more reliable in-building coverage, increases the number of available communications channels from five to 10 and provides 1,200 new mobile and portable radios to first responders and public safety personnel. It is also designed to enable police and fire departments to better communicate with other local, state and federal agencies when a multi-jurisdictional response is required. Additionally, the system comes with new features, such as GIS mapping with automatic emergency personnel location and “man down” emergency alerts.

Calvert County Establishes
Veterans Affairs Commission

Calvert County will establish a Veterans Affairs Commission to advise the BOCC on programs, policies and initiatives affecting the lives of Calvert County veterans. The board unanimously approved the measure establishing the volunteer commission during their Tuesday, March 23, 2021 regular meeting.
“Calvert County has strong and proud ties to the military, and we are pleased to establish this commission so that we can better serve those who have served our nation,” said BOCC President Earl F. “Buddy” Hance. Once formed, the commission will work with the community to promote and expand existing veteran support and services within the county. The commission will also be tasked with providing assistance, guidance and information to businesses and other public entities to ensure adequate representation of veterans in employment, education, training and public programs throughout Calvert County.

Virtual Public Meeting
Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan

The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning will hold a virtual public meeting as a continuation of the Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan update process. All who live, work, shop or visit Prince Frederick are encouraged to participate in the virtual meeting on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 7 p.m.
Originally adopted in 1989, the Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan sets policies and actions that guide the physical development within the town center, including private and public development. The Department of Planning & Zoning and consultant team, Sabra & Associates, Inc., a Mead & Hunt Company, will present the draft land use and transportation elements for the Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan update. The draft elements respond to the most pressing issues and concerns raised by stakeholders over the past year through surveys, public meetings and public workshops with interested people.
Those wishing to participate in the virtual meeting must register in advance through the Town Center Meeting registration link below. Registration details can also be accessed through the Town Center Master Plan Update webpage. Registration closes at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, or when capacity is reached. It may take up to one business day to receive confirmation.

Join us for Calvert County's annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 28 at Hallowing Point Park. All eggs are filled with goodies and some have a ticket for a special prize. Bring your camera and enjoy a photo booth for socially distanced pictures with the Easter Bunny.
Guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19 will be strictly followed and all attendees must wear facial coverings and maintain social distance. Hunts will be conducted separately by age group. The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation will host its inaugural Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2. Games will be held at Hallowing Point Park, located at 4755 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick and Cove Point Park, located at 750 Cove Point Road in Lusby.
Events will consist of women’s and men’s doubles on Saturday and mixed doubles on Sunday. Players must register by April 16 to participate and the cost is $60 for one day or $75 for both days. To register online, please click on the link below and use the following activity numbers:

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Therman Gray Memorial Scholarship. Calvert County Parks & Recreation operates this program in memory of the late Therman Gray, a former Calvert County Government employee who was active in working with and mentoring Calvert County’s youth. The scholarship helps those who wish to participate in Parks & Recreation programs but lack the funds to do so. The program also encourages young adults to pursue a career in the field of parks and recreation through a continuing education scholarship.
