Each week, we'll bring you the top five news stories

and events happening around Calvert County.

Explore this week's top five events below.

Calvert County’s annual Safe Nights program providing winter shelter for people without housing will run through Feb. 26, 2023.

Safe Nights provides winter protection for Calvert County’s homeless population by offering shelter in a clean and safe environment. Host shelters will provide a warm bed and breakfast, a bag lunch and dinner. Shelter hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., seven days a week. A one-time in-person registration is required each season. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Call Safe Nights of Calvert County at 443-486-8670 for more information.

The Calvert County Family Network will host a kickoff reception to launch an Open Table initiative aimed at building social support networks to help individuals and families in need.

Through relationship building and accessing social networks, a group of volunteers empower an individual or family with complex challenges to develop a plan and goals for the life they envision for themselves and their children. Community members and interested volunteers are encouraged to attend the informational kickoff event on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at 4 p.m., at the College of Southern Maryland, Prince Frederick Campus, located at 115 J W Williams Road, Building B.

Calvert County residents are encouraged to recycle their live Christmas trees, wreaths and garland at county convenience centers at no charge beginning Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, through Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023.

Beginning Jan. 30, residents looking to recycle their trees must take them directly to the Appeal Landfill and standard yard waste fees will apply. This program does not apply to businesses.

Businesses must bring holiday greenery to the Appeal Landfill where standard yard waste fees will apply.

The Department of Public Safety reminds pet owners to take extra precautions this holiday season when celebrating with friends and family to ensure everyone's safety. New sights, sounds and people can cause pets to become over-stressed which can prompt them to act out. It is also important to secure holiday foods, flowers and plants that may be harmful to furry family members.

If you're looking for a new four-legged friend, please consider visiting the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter website to see available dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and

a terrapin.
