Each week, we'll bring you the top five news stories

and events happening around Calvert County.

Explore this week's top five events below.

The Calvert County Department of Public Safety, Emergency Communications Division, reminds residents and business owners to ensure that their multi-line telephone systems provide direct access to 911, without requiring an individual to dial any other numbers first, as required by state and federal law. Multi-line telephone systems are typically found in office buildings, campuses, hotels and other enterprises.

For questions or more information, citizens may contact the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Communications Division, at 410-535-1600, ext. 2492.

The Calvert County Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management, reminds citizens that locations throughout the county are open for people who need a warm, dry place to take temporary refuge from the cold.

County community centers and library locations are available during regular operating hours as warming centers. For a list of warming centers, visit online.

Residents who need transportation to a warming center outside of regular public transportation operating hours should call the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 410-535-2800 to request transportation assistance. For medical emergencies, citizens should call 911.

Our furry friends have special needs when severe weather strikes! During these extremes, the Department of Public Safety may issue an Animal Safety Alert requiring certain protections for animals from dangerous weather conditions.

You can receive these alerts by following our Facebook pages or downloading the Calvert Prepare app to receive push notifications right to your mobile device.

Active alerts will also be posted to the Calvert County Government and Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter websites.

Calvert County residents can help improve their county government services by participating in a new survey that aims to help officials better understand residents’ priorities, concerns on county services and overall quality of life.

The survey is available at www.CalvertCountyMd.gov/Survey and asks residents to rate their experience with different aspects of life in Calvert County including housing, education, transportation and public safety. Feedback will be used by county officials and staff to better identify and understand concerns and enhance the county’s responsiveness to community issues.

The Calvert County Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Division, will host free paper shredding events for county residents and businesses. Shredding documents helps prevent identity theft by destroying confidential or sensitive information.

The following shred events will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine:

  • Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at Huntingtown High School located at 4125 Solomons Island Road in Huntingtown
