First Commissioners Brunch The first opportunity of the year to attend a public Port event took place on the morning of the January 25 Commission meeting. The first ever Commissioners Brunch was held on the outside deck at Rusty's Seafood and Oyster Bar.
Attracts Hundreds to Port
Public response was enthusiastic with about 220 business and community leaders, professionals, port tenants and other interested individuals gathering to chat, mostly about Port growth, economic opportunities and the big vision of the Port's future.
As part of the 'Sweet Opportunities' community outreach, additional events to engage the public are being planned throughout this year.

On June 19, 1986, Jerry Allender, then Secretary/Treasurer of the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners, made a motion to prepare a Port budget that did not include revenue from ad valorem taxes. This led to the unanimous decision of the Board to stop collecting these taxes from its constituents, a decision that -- thanks to a dedication to financial independence, careful planning and business success -- never has been reversed. This year, Port Canaveral celebrates a proud milestone, 25 years without taxes.
