Dear CDO Parents, After going to open house Wednesday night, I realized once again how dedicated and enthusiastic our teaching staff is here at CDO. We are lucky to have so many talented teachers! The Drama department is in need of costumes from the 1920's era. If you have any items you could donate please email Mr. Cannon. Please remind your students to go to the Club Expose next week. Getting involved in a club is a great way for students to make new friends and feel connected. See you at the football game! Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
Each year we work diligently to create classes that are designed to create academic success with all of our students. As you know in your own family, each child is different and has different needs and interests. Two of the most carefully developed programs are our newest programs which are called the Freshman Success Block and the Sophomore Success Block. Theses blocks are designed based on cutting edge educational research implementing project based learning, integrated curriculum and understanding by design. The classes are designed to be small enough that each student gets one on one attention with the teachers. The Freshman Block includes Algebra, English and Biology and the Sophomore Block includes Geometry, English and World History. Each of the three teachers in the block work closely together to design individualized coursework for their students. Last year we piloted the Freshman Block and this year we are piloting our Sophomore Block. Dr. Godlewski who is one of the block teachers was a finalist in the University of Arizona/Circle K teacher of the year due to her work within this program. You may have seen many of our students in the block class on television last spring as they were filming a story on our block and Dr. Godlewski creative teaching.
The selection of students for this innovative program sometimes occurs after the beginning of the year so that teachers have chance to assess and recommend students who would best be suited to be in the classes. Therefore, you may hear from a counselor that your freshman or sophomore has been recommended to be in the block. Schedule changes can occur in the next couple of weeks for this purpose. It is a wonderful opportunity for your student to have the special opportunity to be in one of the blocks.

Counseling Department
News from the Counseling Department
Week of August 22, 2011
Although we have wrapped up the drop/add period, it is still possible for a student to change the level of his/her class if necessary. Students have the first five weeks of the first semester to complete level changes (i.e. moving from Pre-AP English 9 to regular English 9). It is not, however, recommended that level changes be the first line of defense when a student is struggling in a class; students should first talk with the teacher about their struggles, request additional assistance, and attend tutorial on a regular basis. Level changes require teacher approval and will be considered only if the following conditions have been met:
- The student is making a sincere effort to do the work in the class
- The student is regularly making contact with the teacher in the classroom and during tutorial periods to ask questions
- The student and parents have worked with the teacher to understand the scope and nature of the problems causing difficulties
- The student and parents have consulted with the counselor so that the counselor can offer general support and can talk to the teacher with the student
Counselors have begun their initial senior credit checks this week. Students who appear to be missing credits that are required for graduation will be called in so that a plan can be made. If you have any questions about your student's graduation status, please do not hesitate to contact your student's counselor.

CDO Spirti Line
Program: Our program consists of three teams; Varsity Cheer, Junior Varsity Cheer and Pom Line - we are classified as a Spirit Line.
Tryouts: We hold tryouts for our program in May and August, our upperclassmen tryout during the May tryouts and our incoming freshmen and new student's tryout in August. Currently each team has: Varsity 16 members, JV 15 members and Pom 12 members.
Web pages: CDO Cheer has its own Facebook page: You can locate it by doing a search for CDO Cheer. The pom line also has its own Facebook page: you can search for it by using CDO Pom. We post upcoming events, fundraisers, practice and game updates, pictures, encouragements, etc...
Fundraisers: Upcoming fundraisers; currently:
- We will be selling subway lunch boxes to the wonderful staff of CDO every Friday during the football season for $5. They pay Ms. Christman and the food is delivered by 11:30 a.m.
- On September 30th we will be having a youth spirit clinic for K-8 grade students of our community. The cost will be $15 to include a tee, bow and performance at that evenings Dorado football game.
Booster Club: We have wonderful parents that helped us set up our booster club for our squads. They help in seeking funds outside of the school, organize events, help with competition's and fundraising events.
Coaching Staff:
Head Spirit Coach: Tiffany Brown (myself): has been with CDO as the head coach for seven years. I come from a long background of dance, cheer and tumbling. I began coaching at the age of 18 and have been coaching for a total of 15 years at the high school level. I have personally attended national competitions as a competitor and as a coach in pom and cheer categories, in which the teams I was involved with took home 3 national titles. I'm a mother of a ten year old that is actively involved in football, karate and wrestling. I've been married for 12 years. My husband is the assistant coach for the CDO Wrestling team. You could say; we are a family of athletes. I love what I do and hope to continue for many more years.
Assistant Spirit Coach: Chelsea Munoz: a graduate of CDO and a member of spirit line. She has been coaching at CDO for three years. She is married to a Tucson Fire Fighter. Chelsea works hard outside of our program in the insurance field and in her spare time she and her husband enjoy camping, waterskiing and traveling. She is a positive influence to our program and has a high standard for the true meaning of what a "CDO SPIRIT LEADER" should represent.
Assistant Spirit Coach: Breland Clark: a native of Texas; came to Arizona on business as a dental sales representative. She has an extensive background in dance. She has been coaching at CDO for three years. She and her husband a gym owner on the east side of town welcomed their first child this summer. She is a great asset to our program and brings a lot of her Texas style routines to the program.
I enjoy working with both of these ladies. Our program takes all of us to be successful. Our parents and community are also a large part in our program. We attend the OV Holiday parade every year to show our support to our community and school. We appreciate our community.
This season our program will be competing to qualify for national's in California. With the help of our community we can make our program's hopes successful by your support in our fundraising efforts.
We would like to thank all those that have given their continued support to our program. We appreciate all that our community and school does for us.
Many Thanks,
Tiffany Brown
& Spirit Staff |

TUTORIAL TIME
Canyon del Oro believes that all students can learn but some students need more time to learn some concepts. Therefore, we provide tutoring each week of school.
During most block days of each semester all teachers are in their classrooms
from 2:42pm-3:20pm available to provide individual and small group help to students.
Student buses do not leave campus until this tutoring time is complete. Students can attend classes of teachers they have during the 2011-12 school year.
Students who ride buses are not allowed to leave campus and return to catch their bus.
Upper classmen who have vehicles and students with rides must leave campus prior to 2:50pm to alleviate parking lot congestion.
Students who are earning below a 'C' grade in any of their classes should make major use of the tutorial opportunities.
All students who ride buses must choose from the options below.

Please note the MPR will not be open at this time and the Library will be
