"There is nothing so stable as change," writes recent Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan. Certainly, with an election just around the corner and autumn leaves turning color, change is apparent! But rather than fighting the switch, we adapt, familiarizing ourselves with new policies and finding fitting ways to welcome in crisper air. To remain relevant and engaging in economic, personal finance, and entrepreneurship education, we do the same-- reworking delivery and uncovering resources to better serve the dynamic needs of teachers and students.
We hope that in paging through our
2015-16 annual report and in reading on about this summer's progress, you'll agree that we're accomplishing much in this regard. Strengthening cooperative relationships with local legislators and department of education colleagues, we're helping to craft personal finance standards for Delaware's students. Identifying how we can assist teachers in meeting these standards, we've added staff dedicated to this transitional yet ongoing instruction. We continue to invite speakers who offer innovative programs, we foster research that promotes more effective teaching methods, and we write meaningful lessons that apply to current events-- all in an effort to raise more cognizant, responsible, and contributing citizens.
We thank our partners for standing by us as we navigate these crossroads. Without you, solutions cannot be reached or delivered. We have accomplished much together and look forward to building on that momentum.
Enjoy the season!

Economic Educators
UD alum, global economic educator Kasman workshops with master's students
When searching for solutions to the world's most serious problems, many would agree that education is a clear choice. But few could explain specifically how education can help solve issues like poverty, governmental instability and social inequality.
Working to find those answers is Romina Kasman, an educational consultant for the Department of Social Inclusion...

High school students open 'Business-for-a-Day' kiosks on Main Street
Eighteen high school students spent a week last summer living on the University of Delaware's campus, learning the essentials of entrepreneurship and college life as part of the EntrePrep Summer Institute.
By Friday, the students were creating and running their own "Business-for-a-Day" on Newark's Main Street and throughout the UD campus.
During the EntrePrep program, financially supported by Barclays and TD Bank, students spent six days residing on campus and received more than 30 hours of classroom instruction on business, economics and personal finance.

The CEEE Makes the Case for Financial Literacy at this Year's DNC
In July, Associate Director Bonnie Meszaros participated in a financial literacy policy luncheon and panel discussion hosted by the national Council for Economic Education in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Attendees were asked, "Is your State Part of the Problem or the Solution?" as a way to focus on the issue that only 17 states currently require students to take a course in personal finance.
Delegates, teachers, business leaders and others heard advocates and educators make the case for state requirements relating to personal finance K-12 education. We are proud that Bonnie contributed to the panel that emphasized the need for financial literacy. We are also proud that she publicly announced that Delaware has recently become part of the solution by having gained approval to develop related standards and professional learning opportunities to enable teachers to implement new requirements by the 2020-2021 school year. Delaware's new state standards will address financial planning and decision-making, money management and payment options, and issues of saving, investing and risk protection.
Bonnie informed the audience that it is essential to educate students about personal finance at a young age. To do that, we must properly train teachers and gain the support of school administrators, district officials and members of state departments of education.
The CEEE stands ready to help teachers and school leaders advance financial literacy education by providing the guidance to integrate personal finance across the curriculum in grades K-12.

The Election Offers Economics Teachers Valuable Teaching Moments
CEEE Program Coordinator Scott Bacon
has been assisting high school teachers in taking full advantage of the teachable moments of this presidential election by illustrating how economics and elections interact.
He recently published a lesson that is one of 16 related resources offered to teachers by the Council for Economic Education's Econedlink. In that lesson, "Party Platforms and Economics Issues," students learn to identify major economic policy platforms of the Democratic and Republican parties and analyze how liberal and conservative policies differ with respect to current economic issues. The program covers concepts such as employment, national debt, taxes and trade.

The CEEE Welcomes Gail Colbert as Personal Finance Coordinator
The CEEE is pleased to welcome Gail (Funk) Colbert as the new Personal Finance Coordinator. She will support educators, schools and school districts throughout Delaware in their efforts to satisfy new state standards and teach personal finance at a high level.
A Delaware native and MAEEE alumna (class of 1997), Gail was on the CEEE staff from 1984 through 1996, first as Stock Market Game coordinator and later as program coordinator. Under her direction, the Delaware Stock Market Game program received the L. Massey Clarkson Stock Market Game of the Year Award for creativity, growth and excellence in administration. Before becoming a member of the CEEE staff, she taught at Newark High School.
Gail recently returned to Delaware from Minnesota where she was a social studies teacher for 20 years. She taught Economics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics and AP U.S. History and served as social studies department and school district chair.
While teaching in Minnesota she won second place in the statewide Innovative Economic Educator Award competition and also won the Economic Educator Excellence Award from the Minnesota Council on Economic Education. Her advanced placement students were recognized as state finalists in the Federal Reserve Bank Essay Contest and in the Economics Challenge competitions in 2005 and 2007.
Working with CEEE staff members Bonnie Meszaros and Scott Bacon, Gail is reaching out to high school teachers who currently offer the
Keys to Financial Success personal finance curriculum co-authored by the CEEE and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
