As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today's gospel includes Jesus' promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father's house. Our baptism commissions us to share Jesus' mission in the world. As First Peter reminds us, we are a holy people, called to proclaim the one who called us out of darkness into light. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ-our way, our truth, our life.

Just before his death, Jesus talks to his disciples about home. We all long for it: a place called home. As children we may have experienced home as the place we belonged and were accepted. Or we may first have experienced home when we started making our own home, away from our family of origin. At many times in life it can feel like we are far away from home. If only we could click our ruby-slippered feet three times and say, "There's no place like home," and then magically be transported there!

The disciples are gathered with Jesus for a final evening meal. They are starting to feel their feathers getting ruffled and are scared to stretch their wings. Jesus was home for them. He gave them a kind of belonging that felt like home. There was a powerful, divine acceptance in him that had changed them and given them peace. But Jesus was talking about going away, and it felt like being kicked out of the nest.

Then Jesus promises them: Wherever I am, you will be. And wherever you are, I abide with you and God abides with me. You are always home because God is always with you through me. Home is wherever you are because I am wherever you are.

Home is who you are with and belong to, where you are more than where you were. We belong to God through Jesus in the Spirit. This is the gift of baptism, the gift of belonging. Wherever we are, we are home because God is with us as gracious and loving presence.

If you've ever felt like you have no place to belong, welcome home. Eat supper, rest, and be at peace. In Christ, you are home, and there's no place like it.

Several tornadoes have ripped through multiple states causing loss of life and massive devastation, and the threat of more tornado outbreaks is looming. Lutheran Disaster Response is at work, assessing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by the tornadoes. Working with our extensive network of ELCA members, local congregations, synods and Lutheran Social Service affiliates in the affected. We are a church that rolls up its sleeves and gets to work. We know it will be a long road to recovery, and your gifts are needed now to begin coordinating volunteers, rebuilding homes and offering spiritual and emotional care to those in need. Gifts designated to "U.S. Tornadoes" through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely - 100 percent - to help survivors of tornadoes rebuild their lives and livelihoods. You can help provide comfort, healing and hope in the midst of destruction.

Team CCL invites you to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation "Walk with Love" for breast cancer research. Our team is registered, but we are still looking for more people who would like to join us on May 18th after church at Lake Merced. For those who are not able to join us in the walk but would like to make a donation to the cause, the Team CCL website to donate is: http://walkwithlove2014.kintera.org/teamccl

Video technicians needed! We supplement our regular Christ Church audio podcasting with an occasional. If you would be interested in running a camera or doing some video editing occasionally, please talk to Pastor Steve.

Ancient Wisdom

Now that we have seen the resurrection ...

Now that we have seen the resurrection of Christ, let us adore the all-holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. We bow in worship before your cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify your resurrection, for you are our God, and we have no other, and we magnify your name. All you faithful, come: let us adore the holy resurrection of Christ, for, behold, through the cross joy has come into the world! Let us always bless the Lord, let us sing his resurrection, for by enduring for us the pain of the cross, he has crushed death by his death.

Amen. Alleluia!
