Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

In Isaiah we hear that God's house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today's gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter.

As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we recive strength to be signs of comfort, healing and justice for those in need.

Baby Bonnet in use in Africa

Baby Bonnet Ministry:
Many of you may remember that in January Marilyn Shipp helped take over a thousand baby hats to the Cross River state in eastern Nigeria.  We have received a message from a nurse-midwife who will be going to Northern Nigeria in May requesting 500 hats to take with her. There are currently a little over 100 in the supply available.  Donations of knitted, crocheted, sewn or purchased hats for newborns will be greatly appreciated. There is a flyer with a knit and a crochet pattern in the narthex basket.  Sometimes it is easy to find hats at garage sales or in thrift stores.  Any newborn hats in good, clean shape can be used.  Unfortunately, hats in premie sizes are not usually needed since most premies in these countries do not survive. Please leave your donations in the basket in the narthex or in the church office.  The Baby Bonnet Ministry in an ongoing project and hats are ALWAYS needed and distributed in many different countries. A hat on a newborn's head can easily save a baby's life. Thank you for your participation.

Ancient Wisdom for Today's World... Our Alarming Ability to Ruin Everything

Some things are intrinsically good, some are intrinsically bad, and some are in between.

Things good in themselves are wisdom, justice, temperance, courage.

Things intrinsically evil are the lack of these virtues. In the middle are wealth, health and illness, knowledge and ignorance and so on. They are said to be in the middle because in themselves they are neither good nor bad: it depends on their use whether they are called good or bad.

For instance, wealth is good when given to charity, but bad when spent on pleasure. Similarly poverty is good in teaching us patience and unshakeable gratitude to God, but bad if it produces blasphemy and servility with a lack of endurance. Fame and notoriety are good if they teach us to be humble and to strive for future glory, but bad when they induce a spirit of dependence, adopting 'what people may think' as the criterion of our actions.

In conclusion, we must not condemn things. Nothing that God has made is bad. It becomes bad only if we, of our own free will, make a bad choice because we are urged on by, for example, self-love or passion.
