In spite of all we have heard and all that we have seen, it is often hard to believe. Because it is hard to believe, we will invest ourselves in the Easter mystery for fifty days (a week of weeks). Because it is hard to believe, John the evangelist will provide sign after sign celebrating Jesus' victory over death. Because it is hard to believe, the Lord Jesus will return to us again and again in the mystery of the holy communion, inviting us to touch and taste his presence, and offering us his peace.
If captivity is at one end of the spectrum and freedom is at the other, where are you? All of us should find ourselves completely on the free side of the spectrum because at the empty tomb, we were released once and for all from the power of sin and death. Yet many of us don't find ourselves there. Most of us find ourselves locked up in that room with the disciples.
The disciples receive the news that Jesus has been raised from the dead, and in their fear they lock themselves behind closed doors. They are set free only to jump back into captivity. What a reaction! What a familiar reaction.
The disciples are proof that we need Easter constantly. We continually forget our new status as free creatures. We continually forget that, without Easter, we really are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. Yet Jesus gives us the means by which we can have Easter constantly. He gives each disciple a key that will unlock any fellow captive at any moment of any day. "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained" (John 20:23). The key is forgiveness. With this key in hand, we join Jesus in the work of emptying the prison!
Many weeks we begin our worship with words of confession and forgiveness. We come together and pull that key out of our pockets so that we can practice using it. When we go back out into the world, we've got forgiveness in our bones.
Because of the gifts of the Spirit given at baptism, you have the key to the prison. Who will you set free?

Ancient Wisdom
One Bread, One Body...
Just as the bread is made out of many grains ground and mixed together, and out of the bodies of many grains there comes the body of one bread, in which each grain loses its form and body and takes upon itself the common body of the bread; and just as the drops of wine, in losing their own form, become the body of one common wine and drink-so it is and should be with us, if we use this sacrament properly. Christ with all saints, by his love, takes upon himself our form, fights with us against sin, death and all evil. This enkindles in us such love that we take on his form, rely upon his righteousness, life and blessedness. And through the interchange of his blessings and our misfortunes, we become one loaf, one bread, one body, one drink, and have all things in common.

Prayer of the Day
Jesus & Doubting Thomas
O God of life, you reach out to us amid our fears with the wounded hands of your risen Son. By your Spirit's breath revive our faith in your mercy, and strengthen us to be the body of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
