Bring your furred, feathered, scaly or slippery animal companions (pet pictures and stuffed animal toys too) for the Blessing of the Animals, as we celebrate St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. Come celebrate the role that our pets and animal companions play in our lives. Then stay for the First Saturday Social & Yappy Hour at 6 p.m.—refreshments and treats for both humans and animals.
Newcomers’ Coffee with the Clergy

Vienna CROP Hunger Walk

Hunger is one of the greatest injustices facing our world today, but it doesn’t have to be. You can feed our neighbors here and around the world! Join Holy Comforter on October 6 for the Vienna CROP Hunger Walk! It is a very fun, family-friendly walk to raise funds and awareness. Register online HERE. Can’t walk on October 6? Sponsor our team online HERE. Every donation helps end hunger and save lives! Help us reach our goal of 50 walkers and $5,000 raised!

Registration takes place from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The walk will be 2.1 miles—accessible for the whole family. For those not wishing to walk the entire distance, there is an optional “Coffee Crawl” which is .3 miles along Church Street. More details available HERE. We also need volunteers! Questions? Holy Comforter’s Adult Choir will present a service of Evensong. This beautiful liturgy will be followed by an elegant reception. Music will include Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B-flat Major by John Stainer and “God to Enfold Me” by David Kelley. Join us, and bring a friend!

Wellness and Spirituality Forum:
Hunger and Poverty in Our Community
This Sunday, October 6;

In preparation for the CROP Walk, this Wellness and Spirituality Forum will help us understand the issues of hunger and poverty right here in Vienna and Fairfax County. Please come and learn more from Ollie Fowler, Board Chair of Committee for Helping Others (CHO). 25% of the funds raised from the CROP Walk will go to CHO to help reduce hunger in our local area. CHO also provides clothes, furniture, and financial assistance to help clients with rent, utility bills, medical bills, etc.

Better Angels Workshop:
Depolarizing Within
Saturday, November 2;
2–5 p.m. in the Ministry Center

Better Angels is a national citizens’ movement to reduce political polarization in the United States by helping liberals and conservatives to understand each other beyond stereotypes. This workshop teaches participants how to be more aware of their own "inner polarizer," how to be critical without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping large swaths of the population, and strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views. Hear about the Spirituality of Alzhiemer’s. Explore your creative side during an Art and Soul painting class for all ages. Experience Centering Prayer, walk the labyrinth, visit with therapy dogs, play GaGa Ball, and jump in the bounce house. A healthy lunch is provided.

Sunday School Parent Session

All Sunday School parents of children grades Pre-K through 6th Grade are asked to join us in the Chapel this Sunday to learn more about your child's Sunday School program.

  • Pre-K through 4th Grade: The Rev. Dr. Rosemary Beales—Godly Play Trainer and Chaplain at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School, Alexandria—will lead parents in a Godly Play lesson. This session may be video taped.
  • 5th and 6th Grade: Susan McGuire will discuss our new Faith in Action program.

Both sessions will be followed by a presentation on Children's Spirituality hosted by the Rev. Dr. Rosemary Beales.
Last Sunday, our Confirmation class—also known as Confirm not Conform(CnC)—started the 2019–2020 session. We had a record size class of 25 wonderfully engaged students exploring their faith. Click below for pictures and more.

FOYERS Fall-Winter Round

There are 2 flavors of Foyers—Traditional which meets in homes and dine-out which meets in restaurants. Enjoy fellowship and good food in small groups. Foyers meet once a month (at a time scheduled within each group) to share a meal and friendship. It's a great way to get to know people. All Foyer groups are now forming. Senior Saints BYO Lunch

Dan Sherman, an economist who teaches musical theatre, will lead us in a celebration of songwriter and lyricist Cole Porter. Dan will use his multimedia approach to present Porter's life and give us the chance to hear great performances of Cole Porter's delightful, delicious, de-lovely songs. Marriage Ministry Presents:
Stop, Love and Listen

Please join us in St. Mary's Chapel for a marriage listening workshop with Frances Sullinger, Executive Program Associate of Listening Hearts, and Alexandra MacCracken, Gestalt Pastoral Care Minister at Holy Comforter. During the workshop, we'll be exploring how to apply Listening Hearts principles to marriage, and spouses will be given a live demonstration of an empathic listening skill—then get a chance to try it with each other! Happily married couples, those going through struggles, new couples, and old couples are all welcome to attend. You are also welcome to attend this workshop even if your spouse cannot be there.
