Jesse Dascola- You will be Missed

All of us here at Circus want to wish Jesse Dascola the best of luck in culinary school in Chicago.  Jesse was Circus Mojo's very own knife juggling, clarinet playing, unicycle riding, circus chef.  Jesse began her circus training eight years ago with Paul Miller CM's Founder in Chicago and has remained a part of her life all the while. She is an irreplaceable part of the team and we look forward to working with her in the future! Jesse joined us last year for our tour to Germany this was her second trip to Circus/CircArtive Pimparello. Jesse participated in a 12 week paid internship via the Northern KY Area Development District a resource for Workforce and Economic Development.  She mastered food for 50 guests at our Collegiate Circus Festival  May 3-5th  It's pretty good when you can have a gig in the circus as you go off to Culinary School.  We will see you down the road Jesse.

Mojo Team News
Welcome to two new summer artists in residence! The talented Aaron Easterbrooks and Anteneh Hameso (Meshu)  have joined the Mojo gang for the summer.

Aaron Easterbrooks was a classmate of Circus Mojo's Founder Paul Miller at the Ringling Brother's Clown College in the late 1900's (as Paul likes to say).  Aaron has enjoyed a staggering career of clowning, acting, writing, directing and producing in the showbusiness world.  Based in Budapest Hungary, he and his son are visiting the States for the summer and we are thrilled to have his talent as guest Artistic Director here at Circus Mojo.

Meshuis originally from Awassa,Ethiopia and has been living in the USA for the last 4 years. At the age of eight, he joined and helped found Debub Nigat, The Circus of the Southern Dawn , the brainchild of Berekit Dana, a  Red Cross Employee who had the  idea to bring the circus to Awassa to help kids find focus and learn skills.

Debub Nigat performed all over Awassa, the capital city in Southern Ethiopia. They began performing at markets and created a partnership with Medical group TENA TBIKA , a public health group that hired a van a driver to transport the circus to perform all over Ethiopia.  They began performing circuses to draw giant crowds to raise awareness for vaccination efforts and to eliminate female genital mutilation.

Since moving to Chicago, he has done work with the Chicago Waldorf School DaVinci Waldorf School, Mundelein, IL. CircEsteem, Inc, Chicago, IL Circus Pimparello, Stuttgart, Germany,

Meshu is the founder of the Kibera Social Circus, which sits in the largest urban slum in Africa just outside Nairobi Kenya.

He is skilled in choreography, tumbling, sport acro, and juggling.  Meshu and Paul Miller have joined to create the Social Circus Foundation to fund this work .

Meshu and Aaron are joining us as guests artists leading up to Cirque Devou and will be heading back to Europe and Africa this fall.

Summer Camp Update
We are at the halfway point for summer camp this year and it has been AWESOME!  We have had great campers and are looking forward to even more great campers to come!  We still have a few spots open still for each week- it's not too late!

Circus Mojo Summer Camp teaches juggling, hat tricks, partner acrobatics, plate spinning, theatrical clowning, and ball, stilt, and tight-wire walking and more. Instructors cater to the personal needs and talents of their students, bolstering and spotlighting everyone's unique mojo. Campers gain respect for themselves and each other as they develop skills as individuals and as an ensemble. At the end of each camp session, the campers experience the creative process of producing and performing in their own Circus Mojo Show.

In Ring Three... The Sport of Circus Wellness

By: Louis Kutcher PhD, Yoel Donchin MD, Paul Miller

While viewers of a circus see a performance, to the performers it is also an intense athletic event. In order to entertain, the clown must be part acrobat, part ballerina, and part daredevil, while at the same time connecting one-on-one with each audience member. This blend of athlete, artist and therapist is even more pronounced in the medical setting. In medical wards, like a dialysis unit, the skill of the acrobat can relieve the tedium of a long procedure; whereas in a rehabilitation or therapeutic setting many of the balancing and manipulation activities that are traditional to the circus can be re-cast to assist motor skill development. In addition, interactions with the "performer" can empower a patient and give new understanding to their challenges.

As the use of circus skills in healing becomes more recognized it is also becoming more formalized. Research is showing the health benefits of circus wellness and medical clowning in settings ranging from the pediatric wards of hospitals to in vitro fertilization clinics to nursing homes. This workshop will explore this research, provide examples ways in which circus arts can be used in healing, and initiate a discussion of future avenues for study and practice.

The three authors of this work bring experience in all facets of the circus-wellness (or "medical clowning") movement. One (YD) is a physician working with clown doctors; one (PM) is a former circus clown who uses circus skills in a variety of health-care settings; one (LK) is a physiologist with an interest in both juggling and neuronal development.
