A Message from Clackamas Water Environment Services Director Greg Geist
Dear Valued Customer,

I hope you're doing well and enjoying the arrival of spring. As you may know, April 22 is Earth Day, and this year marks its 54th anniversary. It's a day dedicated to raising awareness about environmental stewardship, which is at the core of what Clackamas Water Environment Services (WES) stands for.

We are passionate about educating our customers and community members from all walks of life about how to protect water quality and the environment we all share. We work with community partners year-round on events that you can join to help keep our waterways clean or learn more about our environment. Watch our events calendar to see what's coming up.

I hope you will join us May 8 to celebrate The Kellogg Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility's 50 Years of Service! You can learn more further down in this newsletter.

I'd also like to take a moment to recognize our staff's dedication to protecting our shared environment. In January, during a severe winter storm, they worked tirelessly to keep pump stations running and sewage in pipes. Field staff and plant operators even slept at our facilities to ensure that everything kept running. I'm proud to call them my colleagues.
Clean water for all.

Sincerely,

Greg Geist
Director, Clackamas Water Environment Services

Meldrum Bar Park Cleanup Event along the Willamette and Clackamas Rivers with SOLVE
Thursday, May 9
10:00 a.m. to noon

The partnership between SOLVE and WES for the Summer Waterways Cleanup Series has been highly successful. In 2023, Volunteers removed nearly 35,000 pounds of trash from waterways and natural areas in Clackamas County.

Breaking Ground on the Tri-City Water Resource Recovery Facility Outfall Project
Every day, we clean more than 10 million gallons of wastewater at our Tri-City Water Resource Recovery Facility in Oregon City. The treated water, called “effluent,” is then sent to the Willamette River. An outfall is the discharge point where the treated water flows into the river.

The current outfall from the Tri-City facility was constructed in 1984 and is nearing capacity during peak wet weather events.

“Clack-A-Mole” selected as tunnel boring machine name
After receiving more than 650 naming suggestions for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) we will be using as part of the outfall project, the Board of County Commissioners selected “Clack-A-Mole” as the winning submission. Submissions came to WES from as far as Pensacola, Florida.

Lawn Care Tips
While pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers can help control pesky weeds and insects, they can also cause other problems. All pesticides have some level of toxicity that can be harmful to honey bees, earthworms, aquatic bugs, fish and people.

Clackamas Water Environment Services produces clean water and protects water quality for nearly 200,000 people living and working in Clackamas County.

Each year, we clean more than seven billion gallons of water. In the process, we convert materials that have long been considered “waste” into natural energy and fertilizer. We also help reduce pollution in local rivers, streams, and wetlands caused by stormwater runoff, the number one source of water pollution in Oregon.

We educate and assist community members from all walks of life. It’s our job to ensure that our families and neighbors enjoy the benefits of safe, healthy water for generations to come.

WES is a county department, a service district and a ratepayer-funded organization.
