A Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Clearwater Community,

It’s now March and the winter seems like it flew by. We’ll be sailing in a few weeks, and The Great Hudson River Revival seems like it’s just around the corner. Tickets are on sale and volunteer sign-ups are available at  www.clearwaterfestival.org , as is our initial lineup.

This year’s Clearwater Festival (AKA The Great Hudson River Revival) will be special. In marking the transition from the first fifty years to the next fifty years for Clearwater, we are shifting the Festival’s emphasis from getting government’s attention on environmental issues to engaging with government. We’re excited to have the Westchester County government as a partner in this. Not only will attendees see a return of stage announcements, skill demonstrations and other activism-focused activities, there will be a focus on government programs around recycling, clean energy, smart commuting and other environmental programs that attendees can go home and start participating right away. We’re grateful to Westchester County Executive George Latimer and his staff for their help in this effort.

I hope you’ll join us in our busy spring by:

  • Getting your Clearwater Festival tickets
  • Signing-up as Festival and Sloop volunteers
  • Scheduling sails
  • Joining board committees
  • Contacting board@clearwater.org to inquire about becoming a candidate for our board of directors
  • Starting a petition to put a candidate on the ballot for this September’s election of new directors

I look forward to seeing you on the Sloop, in the tidelines, at Croton Point and elsewhere.

Sincerely,
Greg Williams
Executive Director

Environmental Action Updates
FUKUSHIMA REMEMBERED:   March 11 was the 8-year anniversary of the Fukushima-Daiichi disaster. Please take time to remember the victims of the tsunami and reactor failures at Fukushima. This short trailer from our 2012 conference for First Responders summarizes the disaster.   Eyewitness Fukushima: First Responders Conference - Trailer . The full conference can be found  here  as well. This  2019 Annual Report on Fukushima  covers some of the new technical discoveries and the environmental/health nightmare that nobody is talking about.
Indian Point Update:   We are currently seeking widespread support for State legislation to create Citizen Oversight Board to have effective input into the decommissioning of Indian Point when it closes in 2020-21. This legislation can become a model for the more than 90 nuclear reactors that will be facing decommissioning in the next decade across the nation. Click  here  to read the Draft Legislation. We are also hosting weekly calls of the National Decommissioning Working Group and planning a Congressional Briefing to help the more than 100 new Congressional representatives understand the dangers associated with nuclear waste storage and transport and the urgent need for more Congressional oversight.
What is CCPA?   The proposed NY State 2019 Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) sets a path for the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions – 100% of human-caused climate pollution to be eliminated by 2050 from all sectors. The bill not only mandates an economy-wide shift to renewable energy, but also defines equity provisions which prioritize existing and future resources towards vulnerable, impacted, historically disadvantaged and front line communities, and establishes specific just transition support for workers. The 2019 bill is  S2992  in the NYS Senate and  A3876  in the NYS Assembly . Read Clearwater’s full comments  here .
Action Alert
Please help stop the proposed Danskammer Expansion :   Consistent with our support for a rapid transition to a Renewable Energy Economy with storage and efficiency and our strong opposition to new fossil fuel infrastructure, Clearwater is actively opposing the expansion of the current Danskammer peaker plant, which operates less than 5% of the time, to a new year-round gas plant that would operate 60 - 70% of the year. Recently Danskammer Energy released its Preliminary Scoping Statement (PSS) for comment. We urge you to take a few minutes and go on to the PSC website to offer comment by March 15. Click  here  to see a few key talking points and directions for how to submit comments.
US Army Corps of Engineers Releases Interim Report on proposed Storm Surge Barriers and other related projects.    A series of presentations will be held and we have until April 30, 2019 to comment. The report and a schedule of meetings can be found here .
