John T. Shook Community Service Award

Award Nominations Now Being Accepted

Deadline to Submit Nominations is March 5, 2025

The John T. Shook Community Service Award pays tribute to a very special friend and longtime CRS Board member who passed away in 2018. John touched the lives of many people in our community. He was dedicated to community service and he volunteered for many local organizations including CRS. In John’s memory, the CRS Board of Directors established an award in his name, to be given annually to an individual or group that embodies John’s commitment to volunteerism in our local community.

We are now accepting nominations for this award. If you know of an individual or organization that has been dedicated to volunteering for CRS or other organizations in our community, please complete this nomination form. Evaluation of the nominees will be conducted by a selection committee and the recipient will be announced at the Annual Charity Ball being held on April 5, 2025.

WELCOME KRIS!

Please join us in welcoming Kris Murray to the CRS team as our new Bookkeeper and Assistant Client Coordinator. Kris brings her strong organizational and problem-solving skills to the job, as well as her patient and fun personality. Kris is a graduate of Avon Lake High School, Miami University (undergrad) and University of Akron (Masters). Kris lives in Avon Lake with her husband, Trevor, and their kids, Sam, Kate and Annie.

Fun fact: Kris's mom, Maggie Corcoran, was a long-time employee of CRS before she retired in 2016. Kris is very familiar with CRS and has volunteered for many years!

Welcome Kris, we are so excited to work with you!

The housing crisis in Ohio is an alarming reality that continues to escalate, with no resolution in sight. A recent report from the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio and the National Low Income Housing Coalition highlights a significant issue: full-time workers in Ohio must earn a minimum of $20.81 per hour to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment.

Housing assistance represents the largest line item in CRS's assistance budget, reflecting our commitment to ensuring stable shelter for vulnerable families. In 2024 we spent over $84,000 in housing assistance to prevent eviction or homelessness for residents living in Avon and Avon Lake.

We couldn’t provide this vital assistance without the generous support of local organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals. Thank you for making this possible!
