Conch Cup Classic

On 25th July the annual Conch Cup Classic golf tournament was held at the Mahogany Run Golf course in St Thomas. This year Eddie Brockbank (Right) won the Conch-tastic trophy, with Conch's very own Brian coming in fourth (center)!

So last month one of our regular charter guests thought they would try me with their own bit of trivia!

When responding to the testing question, they challenged me to name the location that this photo was taken! Nice try Rupert Forester-Bennett but it was too easy- Manchioneel Bay, Cooper Island. Thanks again for the photo!

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) ship Lyme Bay has paid a courtesy call to the BVI as part of its North Atlantic tour. It is not uncommon for British Royal Navy ships to be seen in the territory this time of year, every year there a ship based in the Caribbean Region during hurricane season ready to assist.

As part of the three day visit, the crew simulated a search and rescue scenario at Anegada to test the skills of the BVI's newly formed Territorial Search and Rescue Team (TSART). The ship's helicopter, a Lynx MK8 was involved in the exercise.

Hopefully the crew will have an uneventful next few months as forecaster are predicting a quiet season, with the below average number of named storms.

BVI Emancipation Festival

Each year the BVI celebrates the 1834 Emancipation Act abolishing slavery in the islands and they do it in style with a festival that lasts two weeks! This year the main festival is holding its 60th Anniversary, which promises to be bigger and better than ever!

There is an extravaganzas of music, both local and international, parades, j'ouvert (street jamming), food fairs, arts and crafts and the list just goes on!

A highlight for most is the August Monday Parade through the streets of Road Town, where the kaleidoscope of colours, music and

performers attract thousands to cheer them on! Be sure to look out for the Conch Charters staff in the crowds! The horse racing held the next day at the Ellis Downs Track in Sea Cow's Bay is also one not to be missed.

The main festival village in the heart of Road Town is where most will be found 'limin' each night! It is home to live music and performers, booths selling local food and a fair ground.

The festival this year is running from the 24th July through to 8th August. If you are visiting the islands during festival, be sure to find time to catch up with the goings on, check out the activities calendar;

Conch's Fab Spot of the Month

Soggy Dollar Bar

Home of the infamous Painkiller!

Everybody who visits the BVI must stop in for a drink!

Located on Jost Van Dyke in White Bay, the name originated in the 1970's when the bar first started. With no roads or docks on Jost Van Dyke, bare boaters used to have to swim to shore with their money in their pockets. Once at the bar there was a clothes line for people to dry out their dollars, which is still there today!

Enjoy the laid back atmosphere in a hammock with your new your new favourite rum drink- the painkiller! Or try your hand at one of the many bar games. The famous ring and hook game will keep you both entertained and frustrated for hours!

Make sure you check out the boutique, they sell many unique items as well as a range of Soggy Dollar Bar merchandise. Our top pick has to be the drinks holder that is a sucker, perfect for boaters! You can even order online!

The best part; its open year round! Yes, even September when most other bars and restaurants are closed for the low season.

Again Robertson and Caine has designed a catamaran with excellent sailing performance. The Leopard 46's overall performance and ease of handling has earned it 'Boat of the Year' nominations from Cruising World magazine and acclaim in the international sailing press.

The deck layout is uncluttered and has walk-through access to the aft swim platform.  Mainsail and head sail controls all lead to the helm station. It has a fully battened mainsail with a stack pack for easy stowing, the head sail is roller furling.

A hard top bimini provides shelter from the rain or sunshine.

The Leopard 46 has a raised helm station which is protected by it's own small hard top offering fantastic visibility.

The interior is very light  and spacious with long sleek windows. It has the popular four cabin, four head layout with a single crew berth in the bow.  All four double cabins have a full size berth which you are able to access from either side.  Each head has a separate showering area.

You can open up the cockpit even more by adjusting the rear backrests to face forward or aft.A large cockpit has an aft deck bench seat that becomes a swim/dinghy platform.

A great catamaran to sail and to socialize!
