Kathleen Abbott and Colleen Mora join the Crisis Center's Board of Directors

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia has welcomed two new members to its board of directors, Kathleen "Katie" Abbott and Colleen Mora. The staff and board at CCSS are delighted to have these esteemed business women from the agency's catchment area joining the team. "Katie and Colleen both share the passion of empowering women and children and are deeply committed to this cause," said Dave Anders, CCSS Board President. "Each is going to bring unique perspectives and talents to the Crisis Center," Anders added.

When Ms. Abbott was researching options for board membership, she was hoping to find an agency located in her community and one that offers programs to benefit women and children. "CCSS was my first choice and I'm thrilled to be part of this organization," said Katie. "I'm particularly interested in collaborating with CCSS staff and board members on program enhancements and development, especially programs that help make a long-term impact on reducing domestic violence in the community," Abbott went on to say.

Katie is Assistant Treasurer and Director, Treasury Operations and Cash Management with Exelon and has held a variety of corporate roles since joining the company in 2002. She received her bachelor's degree in accounting from Loyola University of Chicago and became a certified public accountant in 2000. Abbott is a committee member for Hubbard Street Dance Company's annual women's event and a volunteer with the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Anthony Parish in Frankfort. She lives in Frankfort with her husband and three children. When not working, Katie enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Ms. Mora and her husband started working with CCSS four years ago through a program at their church. During that time, she learned more about the services the agency provides for families experiencing domestic violence. "After the program through our church ended, we knew we needed to stay involved with the Crisis Center," Mora said. "We joined several of the agency's fundraising committees and I enjoyed it so much, my desire to become a more integral part of the Crisis Center family continued to grow. I look forward to bringing new ideas for increasing awareness and fundraising to the agency," Colleen added.

Colleen Mora is the Director of Finance and Accounting at Tower Contracting, LLC and has over 25 years of management experience. She is a member of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Directors in 2012 and 2013. She has recently joined the Board of Directors for CASA of Will County. Other volunteer work includes fundraising for St. Anthony Parish, AIDS Research, Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Society, and American Diabetes Association. Her hobbies include running, biking, gardening, quilting, and spending time with her husband and family.

Abbott and Mora have joined a 17-member board that oversees the Crisis Center's finances, policies and procedures, fundraising, strategic planning, and community outreach.

Staff Participates In Continuing Education

Nearly half of the Crisis Center's staff members completed a 40-hour Sexual Assault Training Program presented by Pillars - a nonprofit social service organization specializing in sexual abuse. Many of our clients are raped by their abusers. This training program increased CCSS staff knowledge to better prepare them for dealing with the complex issue of sexual assault.

How Your Support Helps Clients

"Megan" called the Crisis Center for help; she had been with her abuser for three years. After they married, she suffered from emotional, financial, and physical abuse. She worked - her husband did not - he would take her paychecks and not give her money. The physical abuse occurred almost daily and was severe; she had been hospitalized after being kicked repeatedly by her batterer while he was wearing steel-toe boots.

The abuse was witnessed by her children and as a result they were removed from the home. Megan was told if she left the abusive environment she could be reunited with her children. This prompted her to start calling domestic violence agencies for help.

She came to CCSS, and while in shelter, continued to work her full-time job and visit her children several times a week. She immediately started saving money and after some time, thought she could start looking for a place of her own. Her hopes of finding a home were shattered when she learned her abuser had ruined her credit.

Megan told her case worker of this problem and she was encouraged to complete an application for the transitional housing program. She was approved for admittance into the program, moved into her apartment in May, and has been reunited with her children. She is grateful to CCSS staff and supporters and overjoyed to be with her children, living in a violent free environment.
