February 19, 2016 Why American Students Are Flocking to Germany - and Staying
Photo: NBC News
DAAD recently made it into the national spotlight when NBC News covered the growing trend of students making their way from the United States to Germany. In addition to interviewing American students who cite the low cost of education as a major draw to Germany, NBC reached out to DAAD Secretary General Dr. Dorothea Rueland, who also weighed in on this development. She notes that "Germany and its universities have quite a good reputation in the United States...and we have a huge increase in courses taught in English and this obviously makes it easier for American students to channel into the German system." Check out the full story and video interview here. DAAD also conducted a recent interview with Dr. Nina Lemmens, Director of DAAD New York, on this exciting trend. She emphasized the attraction of Germany as being a career booster for many American students, who no longer perceive such a strong language barrier preventing them from going abroad. Read the full interview on DAAD's site (German only).

In the summer of 2016, the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) is going to offer its renowned Summer School again. This year, we will approach theories and current developments with the goal of "Understanding Borders, Security and Identity". We are going to tackle questions in order to answer how borders are established and protected, how our comprehension of security is created and how it can cope with recent events and developments. The Department of International Affairs of the European University Viadrina invites applicants for the Summer Program “Understanding Borders, Security & Identity” from June 1 to July 15, 2016. The application deadline is March 13, 2016 via the online registration. This summer program is designed for undergraduate students in European Studies, Global Studies, History, Social Studies, Cultural Studies, Business Administration and Economics. Our campus is located directly at the German-Polish border. Just take a walk across the bridge and find yourself in another country. There is one in almost every European society, a so-called “national author”. Yet how do national authors develop and how greatly does their work influence the discourse on cultural identity in their respective societies? Why do we assume that national authors are entitled to represent the collective? Discuss these questions at the 2016 International Summer School of the MWW Research Association in Weimar.
