DAAD Presents Positive Developments at Annual Press Conference
At DAADs annual press conference, President Margret Wintermantel and Secretary General Dr. Rüland presented encouraging figures. In 2015, DAAD funded more than 127,000 students and scientists (75,412 from Germany and 51,627 from the rest of the world) - an increase of five percent compared to 2014. Pres. Wintermantel linked the growing numbers not only to the positive reputation of German higher education, but also to wider recognition of the importance of studying and researching abroad as a driving force for innovation.
In 2015, 321,569 foreign students were enrolled at German universities, putting Germany among the five most popular host countries. DAAD noted particularly high numbers of applicants from Russia, the USA and Ukraine, and a strong interest in Master programs with a focus on developing countries. German students and researchers in turn applied most notably for funding to Western Europe and North America.
DAADs new Leadership for Syria program currently funds 200 young Syrians who have had to interrupt or postpone their studies due to the war. By studying at German universities, these scholarship holders are offered brighter perspectives for the future and are better equipped for the task of helping to shape the Syria of tomorrow.
