Governor Appoints DRM Attorneys to Commissions

In Maryland, the Governor draws upon the expertise of commissions to solve state problems. This year, the Governor appointed two DRM attorneys to separate commissions to advocate for the rights of Marylanders with disabilities. DRM’s Managing Attorney and Policy Counsel, Leslie Seid Margolis, will serve on the Commission on Behavioral Health Care Treatment and Access. This commission was established to recommend ways to provide appropriate, accessible and comprehensive behavioral health services. DRM Attorney, Sam Williamson, will serve on the Hate Crime Response and Prevention Commission. This commission is tasked with developing strategies to prevent and respond to hate crime activity, evaluate state laws and policies relating to hate crimes and provide legislative recommendations to address hate crimes in the state. This is an incredible opportunity to shape the laws and policies that govern our everyday lives.

Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House

DRM prepared a nourishing meal for 55 families at the Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore, featuring red beans and rice with grilled peppers, and a delightful array of desserts including pumpkin bread, banana bread, raspberry tart, and fresh fruit. Shannon, DRM's Development Manager, shared her experience, saying, "The Ronald McDonald House truly feels like a home filled with love, hope, and laughter to help families stay grounded though a time of unthinkable stress. Cooking with my colleagues was a delight, and sharing the meal with the families brought a unique sense of connection.” DRM extends sincere thanks to the Ronald McDonald House for their warm welcome and their dedicated efforts in supporting the health and wellbeing of children and their families.

Mental Health Win

Disability Rights Maryland successfully advocated for patients at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center. Previously, patients who resided at the hospital before their trial were not able to receive individual therapy. As a result of DRM’s advocacy efforts, the hospital changed their policy so patients can receive the mental health services they need.

Join Our Mental Health Advisory Council

We are looking for community members who have lived experience with mental health and illness to join our PAIMI Advisory Council. DRM’s federally-funded Protection & Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness (PAIMI) program provides legal advocacy services benefiting Marylanders with psychiatric disabilities. The PAIMI program was created in 1986 after investigations revealed horrific conditions in mental health facilities throughout the nation. Our vital role is to protect and advance the rights of children and adults who have a mental health diagnosis. The PAIMI council is comprised of community members who advise DRM’s staff and board, providing recommendations and setting goals to help the organization make a meaningful impact in the lives of people with psychiatric illness.

A Night of Celebration and Impact

The Breaking Barriers Awards Gala is our annual fundraiser and was a truly memorable event. It included an awards ceremony, delicious food catered by Zeffert & Gold, live music, a photobooth and spirit sweep at the accessible, premiere American Visionary Art Museum. It served as an important reminder of the incredible power of human determination and resilience. The evening was filled with remarkable individuals who have shattered stereotypes, overcome adversity, and blazed new trails in their respective fields. Together, we raised funds critically needed to protect and advance the rights of people with disabilities.
