During Children's Grief Awareness Month this November, Dougy Center is working to raise awareness on how grief impacts children and families, and what we can do to support them. You can help by sharing these messages to your social media, and learning more about the movement to #UnderstandGrief.
No matter how familiar you are with grief, it’s still hard to know what to say when a death occurs. It’s human nature to fall back on clichés and platitudes we’re used to hearing. If you’ve ever found yourself relying on automatic responses, you’re not alone.
Most of the time these sentiments come from good intentions and a desire to comfort. That said, there are some common responses that often miss the mark with grieving children and families.
This November, Dougy Center is joining grief centers and partners across the nation to "Flip the Script." This campaign provides straightforward suggestions on helpful things to say to a child, teen, or adult who is grieving.
Here's how you can Flip the Script and better support someone who is grieving:
-
