Flip the Script during Children's Grief Awareness Month this November

November is Children's Grief Awareness Month and Dougy Center is working to raise awareness of how grief impacts children and families, and what we can do to support them.

No matter how familiar you are with grief, it’s still hard to know what to say when a death occurs. It’s human nature to fall back on clichés and platitudes we’re accustomed to hearing. And while these sentiments usually come from good intentions and a desire to comfort, there are some common responses that can miss the mark when someone is grieving.

All month long, Dougy Center is joining grief centers and partners across the nation to "Flip the Script." This social media campaign provides straightforward and helpful advice on how to support a child, teen, or adult who is grieving.

L.Y.G.H.T. is coming to Portland

Dougy Center's L.Y.G.H.T. program for teens and young adults in foster care will soon have its first groups in Portland.

Based on The Dougy Center Model, L.Y.G.H.T. (Listening and Led by Youth in Foster Care: Grief, Hope, and Transitions) is an evidence-based peer grief support program for youth in foster care impacted by both death and non-death losses.

In collaboration with local community partners, Project Lemonade and New Avenues for Youth, and funding from the Portland Children’s Levy, L.Y.G.H.T. peer grief support groups for youth in foster care will begin in early 2026.

Learn more about L.Y.G.H.T. here and sign up for updates.

Teens navigating grief often respond with phrases like, "I'm fine" or "It's no big deal," leaving adults uncertain whether to inquire further. Yet, beneath the surface, many teens carry the weight of their loss in silence.

On Children's Grief Awareness Day, November 20, join Dougy Center staff for Grief in the Teenage Years: What We Miss & What They Need to explore the unique ways teens experience and express grief, dispel common myths, and offer strategies for creating safe spaces where they feel seen, heard, and supported.

This webinar is free to attend with registration, thanks to a generous grant from the New York Life Foundation. Learn more and register here.
