News from Dougy Center, October 2021
Register Today for Upcoming Dougy Center Grief Education Webinars
Dougy Center is now offering online webinars focusing on important grief education topics.

Geared for professionals in the field, Dougy Center's first webinar, Becoming Grief-Informed: Foundations of Grief Education, is set for October 21, 2021 and will be presented by Monique B. Mitchell, PhD, FT, Dougy Center's Director of Training & Translational Research. Being grief-informed sets the foundation for understanding and responding to the needs of people who are grieving the death of someone in their lives. Misassumptions lead to misunderstanding and mistreatment.

The second webinar, Grief as a Mental Disorder: The Movement to Pathologize Grief, will be November, 19, 2021 and is presented by Donna L. Schuurman, EdD, FT, Dougy Center's Senior Director of Advocacy & Training and Executive Director Emeritus. Labeling people who are grieving with “mental disorders” like Prolonged Grief Disorder, Complicated Grief, or Dysfunctional Grief has both proponents and critics. In this webinar we’ll take a brief but critical look at the movement and evidence for pathologizing grief, some of the implications of doing so, and why this matters.

The cost for each webinar is $59 per person, or register for both for just $110. Registration closes 24 hours prior to each webinar. Register here.
What Should I Say to Someone who is Grieving?
When someone is grieving, it can be hard to know what to say. This Dougy Center Tip Sheet, created in partnership with KinderCare Education, can help. Developed with the input of children, teens, and adults who are grieving, this resource gives examples of common platitudes and clichés, and what to try instead.
