Is Death the New Sex?

Back in 2016 I published an article called "Is Death the New Sex," and since then death education in public schools has become a more acceptable topic of conversation in the public square. Last month I was thrilled to see this report.

In summary, the report proposes that "incorporating education about death into the curriculum empowers schools to proactively address bereavement rather than reacting to it," and emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of bereavement on children.

If you have young children, please take some time to access the many excellent resources available for talking to children about death. HERE is an excellent place to start.

Ayahuasca-Induced Personal Death Experiences

Psychedelics like ayahuasca are not only drawing the interest of the scientific community but are also gaining attention in the business world. Leadership retreats involving psychedelics are believed to expedite personal transformation and provide benefits such as increased openness, enhanced communication, and cognitive behavioral agility. These retreats typically involve psychedelic drug sessions, integration therapy, and group talks. Business leaders believe they can form deep connections, break free from dysfunctional patterns, and improve brain circuitry through these experiences. READ MORE...

Dealing with the Anticipated Death of a Loved One

In her August 5, 2023 article in The New Yorker, “The Hidden Harms of CPR,” physician Sunita Puri, who specializes in palliative care, wrote about how hard it is for many emergency room physicians and nurses to stop doing CPR for a patient who has just died, especially when the person’s family is nearby and expects them to continue until it somehow works. She writes about the relative ineffectiveness of CPR — 85 percent of patients don’t survive with its use — even if it starts at a hospital. READ MORE...

Spying on the Non-Religious

A new app, backed by some of the biggest names in evangelical circles, is mapping the personal information of immigrants and non-Christians in a bid to conduct door-to-door religious conversions through neighborhoods. The app includes a range of serious privacy and data security concerns. READ MORE...

Speaking of Schools

Lawmakers want to intertwine religion with school curriculum in Republican-dominated Nebraska via new bills that give parents more control over their local school’s books and allow public school students to receive school credit for attending religious classes outside school. READ MORE...

Spiritual Bypassing Can be Found

in Every Religious Tradition

Spiritual bypass was coined by the late psychologist John Welwood in 1984 to describe what he saw in a Buddhist community in which he was involved. He describes it as the “tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks.”

We all have parts of ourselves we’d rather not look at, so we deny or push them aside. When we bury these aspects in the subconscious rather than resolve and integrate them, they often take on dysfunctional roles and behaviors that prevent healing and cause harm to ourselves and relationships.
