Sacred Activism
.
In 2016, our annual conference had two speakers that upset a small number of attendees because they addressed political issues that those attendees felt weren't relevant to our spiritual content. Those speakers were Bishop John Shelby Spong and Andrew Harvey. This sparked a debate about whether "spiritual people" should be involved in social justice, or if matters of the earthy realm should only concern materialists.
That question has never been more important than it is today. Andrew Harvey calls it the work of "sacred activism," and at this time in America, it's critical to use all our resources -- body, mind and spirit -- to heal the wounds inflicted by Christian nationalism and the MAGA movement.
So going forward, what you'll find in future newsletters is a section dedicated to sacred activism in addition to all our usual topics.
If that content offends you, you can skip that section. And if this change causes you to feel that you can longer be part of our community, I honor the freedom you have to disengage from us if you wish to unsubscribe.

Psychedelic Drugs May Give a Glimpse
Into Near-Death Experiences
| |
“For the first time, we have a quantitative study with personal testimony from people who have had both of these experiences,” said Charlotte Martial, a neuroscientist at the University of Liège in Belgium and an author of the findings, which were published in the journal Neuroscience of Consciousness. “Now we can say for sure that psychedelics can be a kind of window through which people can enter a rich, subjective state resembling a near-death experience.” READ MORE...
Don't Let Bishop Budde Stand Alone
|
By now almost everyone on earth has seen this viral video. If you haven't yet, please take three minutes to watch it, and then read this commentary by John Pavlovitz, or read any commentary you like, because there are thousands going on around the world right now.
Regardless of which side of the aisle you're on, or where you land on the spiritual spectrum, Bishop Budde's message is flawless. And if you're a Christian, you will surely recognize that her actions on that day perfectly embodied the teachings of Jesus, who spoke truth to power in the same way she did.
All that matters now is that we find a way to unite on the side of sanity and human dignity as we watch the constitution, the rule of law, and democracy itself disentegrate before our eyes.

| |
Punchbowl News first reported the potential change, citing unnamed sources and noting the current chaplain, Rev. Margaret Kibben is now listed as “acting chaplain.” House speaker Johnson's office confirmed that he is moving to find a new chaplain and that he is working with the minority leader to develop a process. The office did not provide a reason why.

This 6-hour live webinar offers an exploration of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), with a particular emphasis on its diagnosis and assessment through a multicultural lens. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the differences between acute grief, integrated grief, and PGD, as well as how to distinguish PGD from other mental health conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
The session will delve into cultural factors that influence the risk factors associated with PGD and provide practical guidance on conducting culturally sensitive grief assessments. The workshop will conclude with an overview of Prolonged Grief Therapy (PGT), an evidence-based treatment for PGD. Case studies will be used to demonstrate the clinical process from assessment to treatment, highlighting key considerations for incorporating cultural perspectives into the therapeutic approach.
