An interview was conducted with Rushan Abbas, a Uyghur American activist and advocate from Xinjiang, by Gargi Mahadeshwar, a second-year undergraduate student working for the Duke Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute.
Abbas was welcomed by Duke University President Price, and she also met and spoke with faculty, staff & students about Witness to Guantanamo exhibit & Uyghur Genocide by China.

2021 Juan E. Méndez Book Award - Awards Ceremony |
On February 22, 2022, a virtual panel talk was held with Robin Broad and John Cavanagh, the winners of the Juan E. Mendez Book Award 2021, as part of the award ceremony.
They talked about their book, The Water Defenders: how ordinary people saved a country from corporate greed (Beacon Press, 2021).
This is the thirteenth year of this prestigious award. The award is supported by the Duke Human Rights Center@the Franklin Humanities Institute, Duke’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the Human Rights Archive at the Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscripts Library.

Koonz Prize - Call for Applications 2022 |
Current undergraduates are invited to enter essays or projects related to human rights in our annual Oliver W. Koonz Human Rights Prize competition. The Duke Human Rights Center@FHI awards one $500 prize to the winners in each category.

Human Rights Summer Research Grant - DHRC |
Currently enrolled Duke undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for summer research funding from the Duke Human Rights Center@FHI. The goals of the grant are to strengthen global research opportunities for students interested in developing, implementing, and working in human rights. Special consideration is given to students whose research projects contribute to a senior thesis or project or to students enrolled in the Human Rights Certificate.
Grants are available up to $2,000.

The Our Day Out: A Story of Queer Resistance and Leadership in Durham Story+ project is looking for a graduate student with digital media production and web design skills, as well as an interest in queer history and organizing, to join the team. Story+ brings together a vibrant network of undergraduate researchers, graduate fellows, faculty project leads, local partners, and campus units to collaborate each summer on critical social issues. This six-week paid summer program combines hands-on interdisciplinary arts and humanities research with innovative storytelling to create dynamic outcomes for diverse public audiences. Story+ graduate project managers provide guidance, expertise, mentorship, and project leadership to their team.

WILL Empower Apprenticeship Program - Applications Open
|
The WILL Empower Apprenticeship Program is a multipronged initiative designed to identify, nurture, and train a new generation of women’s labor leadership. The WILL Empower apprentices may work in a variety of capacities, including organizing, research, communications, politics, mobilization, and policy. Apprentices benefit from a formal mentorship program, with mentors both within and outside of the host organization, and participate in a WILL Empower training and gathering in September. The apprenticeships begin in the Fall of 2022, and pay starts at $18 an hour.

Duke Summer 2022 Digital Humanities Research Grants for PhD Students |
The Digital Humanities Initiative @ the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute is offering DH Summer Research Grants to Humanities PhD Students interested in developing their digital humanities knowledge and projects. The grants are considered non-compensatory awards. Grant recipients will be expected to consult with DHI@FHI faculty/staff on their project plans upon receiving the award, to participate in at least one PhD Lab group meeting of grantees in Spring 2022, and to present their grant outcomes at a PhD Lab group event in Fall 2022. Grantees will also be encouraged to join the DHI@FHI community at events, workshops, and other activities throughout the year. Awards will be $2750, paid out in May and June 2022.

Democracy Summer is an innovative internship program that exposes young leaders to new ideas and political movements. Physicians for Human Rights Spring 2022 Internship - Applications Open |
Every semester, PHR is fortunate to host a group of academically successful and passionate students who represent the next generation of human rights advocates. Students joining the PHR intern team come from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including public health, international relations, nonprofit management, human rights, humanitarian studies, political science, medicine, and law, among others.
PHR interns perform a range of substantive work, including research, data and video analysis for documentation of human rights violations, fundraising and event planning, and monitoring and reporting on human rights developments around the world.

Join us for the Human Rights and the Humanities Lecture (Webinar) that is a collaboration of the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI) and the Duke Human Rights Center at FHI (DHRC@FHI).
Theme: The enormous changes that have overtaken universities in the last fifty years have undermined the ability of academic freedom to protect free expression. Prof. Scott will raise questions about whether notions of consensus are still possible or if academic freedom has become a synonym for the individual right of free speech.
