ECA Member Assists "Hometown Hero"
Marquee Sports Network continues to honor "Hometown Heroes" in the Chicagoland area and Gateway to Learning has been an integral part of the education process during the pandemic. Gateway to Learning (located near Lincoln Square) is a school for adults with intellectual challenges and developmental disabilities. Their mission is to provide lifelong learning that promotes active inclusion at home, work and in the community. Last month, the IBEW volunteered to assist Gateway to Learning by hard wiring their building for proper connectivity after hearing the WiFi infrastructure needed an upgrade and the students were in danger of the upcoming school year being compromised.
“COVID-19 has affected everyone in every industry and learning is no different. With the institution of remote learning for Chicago Public Schools and private schools who have the ability to do that, it was a special challenge for institutions like Gateway to Learning,” said Elbert Walters III, Director of Powering Chicago. “So Gateway to Learning needed to have hardwire ethernet connectivity throughout their facility. When we were first confronted with the ask, Jamerson and Bauwens Electric — one of our Powering Chicago partners — was eager to be put to the task to provide them with their service."
“And so Powering Chicago and Jamerson and Bauwens Electrical Contractors, Inc. Project Manager, Mr. Mark Woosley, got together, visited the property, saw what was required and presented it back to Powering Chicago to see what it is that we could do to make sure that they had the services they needed for their students there.”

The Contactless Office -
Powering Chicago
While telecommuting has become far more accepted in recent months, employees have not embraced the idea of a future in which the office no longer exists. According to a recent Gensler survey of 2,300 U.S. workers, just 12 percent said they want to work from home full-time. This is good news for our industry and all others that depend on a healthy commercial real estate market, but hurdles remain before offices across Chicagoland reopen. Perhaps the most significant hurdle is getting to a point where people are comfortable reentering shared spaces on a consistent basis. Through a new campaign recently launched by Powering Chicago, The Contactless Office, we intend to help speed this process up, showcase the expertise ECA contractors and Local 134 electricians bring to every job, and generate leads that result in new business opportunities.
The campaign is designed to showcase technology modifications Powering Chicago members can install to reduce contact in the workplace and minimize the risk of COVID-19 spreading as offices reopen. To that end, Powering Chicago has a new webpage (linked above) to provide information about these tech solutions and has created an eBook, video and infographic, among other materials, to help educate potential customers about our capabilities in this unique situation. To reach these individuals, targeted advertising is currently running in a number of places, including Crain’s Chicago Business, Google and LinkedIn. Powering Chicago has also shared a number of posts on social media recently (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) to increase awareness of our capabilities.
This campaign is meant to benefit our members, and we encourage you to share these posts through your personal and professional networks to amplify this campaign and to otherwise make use of the content that has been created for your own marketing efforts. If you have questions about any of the materials or would like guidance on how to best make use of them, please let us know. The Powering Chicago team is happy to assist however possible. The past few months have been filled with new challenges, but we will continue to proactively work to overcome them and help decision-makers in Chicago and suburban Cook County understand that when better construction is needed, we are the only choice. If you have any questions, please contact LMCC Administrator, Carrie Spaeth / ECA office at: (708) 531-0022.

NECA PLC Members
A key ingredient in NECAPAC's growing success is the Political Leadership Council (PLC). Contractors who make a personal annual NECAPAC commitment of $5000 give NECA the power to continue expanding their position on the Hill as the million-dollar-plus political action "player." Members have opportunities to play a key role in selecting the issues that our members want NECA to support; participate in critical informational briefing sessions with Members of Congress; and attend the annual PLC Summit with a full day of high-level interaction and briefings from elected congressional leaders and national experts who impact our businesses.
