ECE Faculty to Lead Regional Hub for $285M Semiconductor Research Institute


The University of Florida will lead one of seven regional hubs of a new, $285 million nationwide institute dedicated to advancing America’s semiconductor industry through next-generation simulations known as digital twins. 


Volker Sorger, Ph.D., the Walden and Paula Rhines Endowed Professor of Semiconductor Photonics in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will direct the Florida/Caribbean hub of the SMART USA Institute. Led by the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the institute is focused on creating and using digital twins to advance, accelerate, and optimize manufacturing in the semiconductor industry.

State Budget Includes Additional $80M for Florida Semiconductor Institute


After initially proposing $80M for support of the Florida Semiconductor Institute, Florida Governor Ron Desantis solidified his support for semiconductor manufacturing in Florida when he signed the 2024-2025 Focus on Florida’s Future budget in June. The $80M commitment from the state ensures support for workforce development in semiconductor manufacturing, as well as research and development in advanced packaging, artificial intelligence, and assurance.

Koppal Uses Dual-Camera System to Track Multiple Targets from 1km Distance


Associate Professor and Kent and Linda Fuchs Faculty Fellow Sanjeev Koppal and his research team have developed a unique dual-camera system that allows the tracking of multiple targets at nearly 1km distance with high-resolution.


FoveaCam++ features a wide-angle camera providing a conventional resolution view and a MEMS-driven zoom camera that can query a specific region within the wide angle camera. The team also implemented a real-time image fusion pipeline. See the results in this video linked below.

Law Partners with ARO to Model Josephson Junctions


Distinguished Professor Mark Law has received funding from the Army Research Office for his project “ColdPhase: Improved Junctions and Circuits.” The $425k project works to develop a combined tool with process and device modeling capability for Josephson Junction stacks based on NbTiN deposited using either PEALD or reactive sputtering.

Tabrizian Honored as Rising Star


Dr. Roozbeh Tabrizian has been selected to be inducted as a 2024 Rising Star by the Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine of Florida. The organization honored Tabrizian for “pioneering advancements in semiconductor nano-electro-mechanical systems enabling transformative innovations in microwave spectral processing and precision timekeeping.”
