Wu Receives NSF CAREER Award to Create 

New Quantum Devices


ECE Assistant Professor Yingying Wu has received an NSF CAREER Award in support of her project, “Transforming Quantum Spintronics with Novel 2D Magnetic Transistors and Diodes.” The project will focus on creating new quantum hardware devices like magnetic transistors and diodes that use skyrmions.

Nelms Institute Hosts 2nd Internet of Things Conference


The 2024 Warren B. Nelms Annual IoT Conference was held Dec. 5–6 in the heart of the University of Florida campus. Organized along the theme of ‘Secure and Intelligent Internet of Things for Solving Global Problems,’ the conference successfully brought together thought leaders and researchers from academia, industry, and government to explore the current state of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and its convergence with artificial intelligence (AI). The institute is led by ECE faculty member Swarup Bhunia.

CHIP Lab Secures Funding for Cutting-Edge Photonics Accelerators


The CHIP Lab, led by Dr. Hamed Dalir, has received funding from the Semiconductor Research Corporation to enhance photonic integrated circuits and ferroelectric-tunable transparent conductive materials for high-performance computing applications.

ECE Researcher Creating Watermarks to Detect AI-Generated Writing


ECE Assistant Professor Yuheng Bu and his team are developing a digital watermark that could actually flag AI-generated text whenever someone submits their writing. Using UF’s supercomputer HiPerGator, Bu and his team are working on an invisible watermark method for Large Language Models designed to reliably detect AI-generated content—even altered or paraphrased—while maintaining writing quality.

ECE PhD Student Receives Prestigious MTT-S Fellowship


Asif Iftekhar Omi, an ECE Ph.D. student working with Dr. Baibhab Chatterjee, has been selected to receive the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for Medical Applications, among the most prestigious of accolades in microwave engineering. The fellowship recognizes contributions which have the potential to reshape the future of healthcare technology, particularly in areas where microwave techniques play a pivotal role. Iftekhar Omi, who prefers to be known as Asif, is one of only two graduate students worldwide to receive the fellowship this year.

Two New Faculty Endowments Supercharge Research at ECE Florida


Two new faculty endowments promise to supercharge research at ECE Florida, providing critical support for two of the department’s highest-performing researchers. The endowed professorships, given to Dr. Sandip Ray (L) and Dr. Shuo Wang (R), will support the researchers’ labs and efforts as well as personnel and travel.

Islam Named Yangbin Wang Endowed Rising Star Professor


ECE Assistant Professor Md Jahidul Islam has been named the Yangbin Wang Rising Star Professor, a recognition of his cutting-edge research and impactful student mentoring. The endowment's namesake, Yangbin Wang, is an ECE alumnus (MSEE '93) and the founder and CEO of Vobile Group.

ECE Undergrad Attends IEEE Board of Director's Strategic Retreat in Rome, Serves on Panel


Undergraduate electrical engineering student Max Petlick, also president of the local IEEE chapter, was honored to attend the recent IEEE Board of Director's Strategic Retreat in Rome, Italy. Along with four other students from around the world, he served on a panel answering questions from IEEE directors, providing valuable insight into the modern student experience.
