Farmers market assemblies grow and flourish at EGUSD elementary schools
Amidst abundant rows of strawberries, oranges, apples, broccoli, tangerines and cucumbers were anxiously excited Florin Elementary School students eager to "purchase" fruits and vegetables to share with their families later.
The array of fruits and vegetables on the campus of Florin Elementary School were made possible through Farmers Market assemblies, provided by Elk Grove Unified's Food and Nutrition Services Department with funding provided by the Network for a Healthy California. Through this program, each grade level at a school site attends a Farmers Market assembly where they learn about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables and how to select ripe produce. Each student is given play money to "shop" with and "purchase" fruits and vegetables.
"Selecting your own fruits and vegetables makes eating them even more enjoyable," said Anne Gaffney, nutrition specialist for the district. "This program encourages students to eat more fruits and vegetables and reinforces the healthy message modeled by having many fruits and vegetables to choose from in the school cafeterias.
In April, four elementary schools - Anna Kirchgater, John Reith, Florin and Franklin - enjoyed the farmers market assemblies. In May, the farmers market assemblies will visit the following elementary schools: Union House, Mary Tsukamoto, Prairie and Herman Leimbach.
The farmers market assemblies are a part of EGUSD's nutrition education program. In addition to the farmers market assemblies, the program also presents Jr. Chef and KidTribe assemblies, holds Nutrition Olympics events and facilitates the Harvest of the Month program and poster contests.
The Food and Nutrition Services Department has also helped schools create more healthy environments. In 2011, all 39 of Elk Grove Unified's elementary schools earned awards through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). Schools recognized through the HUSSC program have worked hard to make changes to their school nutrition environment by improving the quality of foods served and providing students with nutrition education as well as physical education and opportunities for physical activity.

Students experience "living history" at Valley High School
In preparation for the California Standards Tests (CSTs), historical figures from several significant events in history were seen roaming the halls and classrooms at Valley High School quizzing students as a part of their annual History Museum on Thursday, April 25.
Since 2004, students at Valley have had the chance to see history come to life and get ready to tackle their CSTs at the annual History Museum.
"The History Museum was created to bring excitement and energy to students to inspire them to do their best on the social studies CST," said Chris Hardwicke, a history teacher at Valley. "It's something the students look forward to each year as many of them have told us the History Museum motivates them to try harder on their tests."
The History Museum was open to students in world history and U.S. history classes, as well as 10th and 11thgrade students. In the History Museum, adult volunteers - Valley history department staff, district administrators and retired teachers - were dressed as historical figures who spoke with students about different standards for the history CST test and encouraged students to perform their best on the test. Students who attended the museum received a ticket for lunch and extra credit in their history class.
The History Museum is one aspect of how social science teachers at Valley are making history fun - and helping students raise their test scores. In 10th grade, students debate in the Roman Senate while wearing togas and hold "dinner parties" where they interact as key figures of the Enlightenment and Age of Revolutions. In 11th grade, students interact by debating the Constitutional Convention, arguing the controversies leading to the Civil War and role-playing the integration of immigrants into urban life. As seniors, students manage political campaigns from primaries through final elections. At all grade levels, students actively engage in Socratic seminars focusing on current events and develop the social skills necessary to discuss controversy without animosity.
These innovative approaches have proved to be quite beneficial for Valley students. Over the past eight years, the number of students scoring proficient and advanced on the U.S. History CST has increased by 47 percent and World History CST scores have nearly tripled.
