Kara Joseph was recognized as an Education Partner at the January 8, 2013 meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

For the past two years, Katherine L. Albiani Middle School staff and community members have had the privilege of Joseph being involved in their school. Valley High School Health TECH students create "traveling health and career fair"

    VHSTravelingHealthFair

Health TECH Academy students from Valley High School took their message of living healthy to the masses when they visited Florin High School with their "traveling health and career fair" on Friday, January 25. The Florin High School visit was their third stop for the traveling health fair; Health TECH students have also visited James Rutter Middle School and Franklin High School.

"The purpose of the health fair is to promote excellent health and fitness to EGUSD students and provide an opportunity for our Health TECH Academy students to practice their presentation and hands-on skills," said John Buckmaster, a social studies teacher and Health TECH Academy coordinator at Valley. "We also featured information on careers in health care."

The concept for the traveling health fair originated from VHS graduate Sergio Guido in 2010 and students and staff spent the last few years preparing for implementation. Students created the materials for their booths as a part of their grade level projects. At the traveling health fair, students focused on fitness, nutrition, public and mental health issues, and conducted blood pressure, BMI and vision screenings.

Students at the host schools were enthusiastic participants in the traveling health fair and enjoyed learning from their counterparts at Valley.

"Students teaching and helping other students is definitely a plus," Buckmaster said. "Hearing from your peers is important. We also featured interactive games that would interest students, including a Wii, fitness equipment and concentration games."

Students who have had the opportunity to attend the traveling health fair have remarked that the fair was a huge success. Buckmaster sees a healthy future for the traveling health fair.

"Our fair will continue to grow as we obtain better tools and more experience," Buckmaster said. "I would expect to visit four or five schools next year. Ideally, we would rotate around and visit different secondary school sites throughout EGUSD. I would also like to see smaller ventures focusing on fitness and nutrition at the district's elementary school sites."

PGHS, Albiani Chinese lion dancers take their show on the road

ChineseLionDancers

With a steady drum beat and a generous clashing of cymbals, an enthusiastic and colorful display is dancing its way throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District. It's the Katherine L. Albiani Middle School and Pleasant Grove High School Chinese Lion Dancers and they could be making their way to a school near you!

"The program was started to fill a need for many students looking to connect to a part of their Asian heritage, although the club is open to everyone," said Traci Seto, math teacher and advisor to the club at Albiani. "Through participation in the club, students learn the ancient tradition of Chinese lion dancing and have an opportunity to share this part of Chinese culture with the community."

Students who participated in the Chinese Lion Dancers Club at Albiani enjoyed their time in the club so much, they wanted to continue their participation when they reached high school. As a result, a "sister" club was started at Pleasant Grove High School. The middle and high school students meet together and learn from one another.

"At club meetings, students learn how to perform the different parts of the lion dance, including the head, tail, drum, cymbals or gong," Seto said. "Although participating in the club is social and fun for students, it also requires hard work and discipline to stick with the training needed to learn and improve their skill level."

The club performs at numerous locations throughout the year, including elementary schools during the Chinese New Year, multicultural festivals, community events and parades. Currently, the Chinese Lion Dancers are making the rounds at EGUSD elementary schools for Chinese New Year performances.

"Our students love participating in the program and demonstrate this by coming back year after year, through middle schools, high school and even return to help out after heading off to college," Seto said. "Our club will continue meeting and performing as long as the students keep showing an interest."

Florin HS B&T Academy students get a "reality check" on personal finances

  MadCityMoney

Students in Florin High School's Business and Technology (B&T) Academy were given a "reality check" when it came to their personal finances when they had the chance to attend "Mad City Money," a hands-on simulation created to give youth a taste of the real world-complete with occupation, salary, spouse, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments.

Students participating in the Mad City Money program were allowed to make mistakes and suffer the consequences of their decisions in a realistic, but safe, environment. Through the program, high school students are given the opportunity to take on the role of an adult. Students are given jobs, income, a family and debt. The ultimate challenge for students is to visit merchants to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, day care and other wants and needs - all while building a budget.

The program, presented by Safe Credit Union, is presented at schools throughout the Sacramento area. More than 80 students from Florin's B&T Academy attended the Mad City Money program.
