Honoring Our Volunteers

Elena Aguirre-Gilliam of Elitha Donner Elementary School

PledgeFamilyDonner

Elena Aguirre-Gillam was recognized as an Education Partner at the June 19, 2012, meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

Aguirre-Gillam has volunteered in her children's classrooms since they were two years old. She goes on field trips and volunteers at school activities. She is not only there for her children, but feels it is important to be there for all students. Three years ago, she began representing her son's classroom as a VIP (Volunteering Invaluable Parent) and has never stopped. Soon, she became PTA President at Elitha Donner Elementary School. While in this position, Aguirre-Gillam has worked toward enriching programs and activities. Her participation in the PTA also gave her the opportunity to have a broader picture of what it is like to be a part of a huge advocacy organization for education.

In addition to her volunteerism, Aguirre-Gillam also teachers English as a Second Language for Elk Grove Adult and Community Education.

Aguirre-Gillam is married to Rick Gillam. They have two children who attend school at Donner: Ricky - a sixth grade student and Robyn - a fourth grade student.

Valley High School alum Jamie Nieto to compete in 2012 London Olympics

When the 2012 Summer Olympics in London begin with their opening ceremonies this Friday, be sure to keep a watchful eye out for one of EGUSD's own.

Valley High School's Jamie Nieto, a member of Valley's Class of 1994, will represent the United States as a member of Team USA's track and field team. Nieto will compete in the high jump.

He earned his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team by winning the men's high jump with a leap of 7' 5 " at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on June 25 in Eugene, Oregon. Earlier this month, he earned his eligibility to compete for the United States by clearing a height of 7' 7" at the NYC Adidas Meet on June 9.

Nieto just missed qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Bejing, China by placing second at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, but did not clear the standard height required to make the U.S. Olympic team. He later cleared the standard height, but it was after the deadline and it was turned down in an appeal. Nieto was also a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, competing in the high jump and just missing an Olympic medal by placing fourth.

For more information on Nieto, click here to visit his profile page on the Team USA website and click here to read more about Nieto on his personal website.

The School Lunch Bus
rolls out for the summer

    SchoolLunchBus

The School Lunch Bus, a new pilot program from EGUSD's Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department focused on bringing lunches to students in need, is rolling into parks across the district throughout the summer.

"Our department has provided meals through a summer meal program in the past, but this summer we're getting the chance to pilot a new delivery system whereby the meals and staff will be transported to community parks by a school bus," said Michelle Drake,  Director of Food and Nutrition Services for the district. "The new delivery system will allow us to reach children in their own communities and continue to support their well-being by providing them a nutritious meal while school is out."

Any student, 18 years of age or younger, can participate in the program. There are no income requirements for participation. FNS will provide meals each weekday from June 25 through August 10. Students will receive a prepackaged cold meal, which includes fresh fruits & vegetables, during a 30 minute time period. Then the bus will proceed to the next park. FNS has projected that they will serve 50-100 students per site each day. The School Lunch Bus will make stops at the following parks:

  • Valley Hi Park (Herman Leimbach Elementary School community)
  • Hite Park (Prairie Elementary School/Samuel Jackman Middle School community)
  • Mesa Grande Park (Union House Elementary School community)

The program is modeled after one used by New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut.  For more information about the program, contact Food and Nutrition Services at 916-686-7735.

Summer school programs abound

at Valley High School

    VHSSummerSchool

During the summer, most school campuses are relatively quiet places. But this summer, Valley High School was an exception to this rule, coming alive with an assortment of summer programs for students.

Valley offered the largest summer school program this year, providing two terms for credit recovery, an independent study program for working students, a program for EL students and a bridge program for incoming ninth grade students.

In addition to current and incoming Valley High School students attending summer school classes on campus, Valley staff and leadership students also held a "summer camp" program for nearly 500 elementary school students. Students attending the summer camp program participated in a variety of activities, including art, science and history/archeology projects, physical education, spirit competitions and team-building activities.

The variety of summer programs offered at Valley this summer are a testament to the school's commitment to reinforcing the Valley Hi regional model of providing a seamless education for students of the region from kindergarten through 12th grade.

"The program not only gave us a chance to provide elementary and middle school students in the Valley Hi region with an opportunity to become familiar with Valley High School and have a safe place to learn and have fun, it also provided a credit recovery opportunity for Valley High School students,"  said Mohammad Warrad, summer school principal at Valley.

Valley staff would like to see the summer school program continue to grow in the coming years.

"We hope to build upon the program we offered this year by including more students, resources and teachers and expand it to provide opportunities for parents to be a part of the program on campus," Warrad said.
