Client Solution 

K12 OER Collaborative Announces Winners of the Rapid Prototype Phase of the Project


EdGate Correlation Services has been selected by Victory Productions to help develop rapid prototype units for the K-12 OER (Open Educational Resources) Collaborative this spring.  As announced by The Learning Accelerator, Victory Productions is one of 10 content developers creating prototypes for the Collaborative, a group of 12 states creating comprehensive open educational resources for K-12 mathematics and English language arts aligned to state learning standards. The goal is for school districts to transition from using textbooks to online instructional materials with licenses that allow users to adapt and customize the content. Victory Productions is developing high school mathematics curriculum which EdGate will review to ensure thorough alignment to state learning standards. EdGate will also supply links to web based instructional resources that are also aligned to state learning standards as complements to the units.

Computer Science Classes in the Spotlight


Fourteen States will now count Computer Science classes as math science and/or foreign language credits that will apply towards a High School Diploma, according to a report by the Education Commission of the States. The new graduation policies are aimed at "aligning K-12 course offerings and graduation requirements with the needs of the workforce." These computer science classes are not meant to replace core math, science, and foreign language requirements.  They will act as advanced options for those students once they have completed the required classes.  In order to increase access to technology and tech-based training for all students in grades K-12, policymakers are taking a good look at the disparities across the population with the goal of increasing overall access to computer science, as well as looking at focusing on teacher training in the subject.

Teaching Trends 

AP/IP Meeting the Demand for Rigorous Learning Experiences 


Long considered the go-to option for U.S. high school students who need challenging work beyond the standard curriculum, Advanced Placement courses are not the only option for an academic challenge. About 830 U.S. high schools offer the International Baccalaureate program, which also provides a rigorous set of courses, compared to nearly 14,000 public high schools (2012-2013 school year) that offer AP.


Some schools offer both, as educational objectives differ between the programs, with AP courses focusing more closely a particular subject, while IB courses take a more integrated approach. "In an AP class, you may look very deeply at an issue and look at it from multiple perspectives," says Matthew Nelson, director of advanced academics for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools in Tennessee. "In IB, it would probably be more, still looking at an issue, but you may be looking at an issue over time and how it has impacted other parts of the world and how there is that connectivity to it all," he says.


Another distinction: IB students can earn an IB diploma, which is recognized by colleges around the world. The College Board, which administers the AP program, may award an AP International Diploma certificate to U.S. students who wish to study overseas. Both IB and AP classes culminate in an exam, that may earn the student college credit, depending on her scores.

Some Districts are Bringing New Science Standards to Classrooms Early

Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have formally adopted the Next Generation Science standards. However, in states such as Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania, which have not yet adopted the standards, some districts are moving ahead with the Next Generation Science Standards anyway.

While students around the country are learning the new Common Core concepts, students in Southern California schools, many being English language learners or students in dual language programs, teachers question how these students will take these tests written with the mainstream English native student in mind.

Eight finalists and winners for the national US Teacher of the Year award discuss how creativity informs their teaching style. These teachers share a common interest in employing art to teach math and science and improve how children learn.

Holly joined EdGate just over a year ago, after trading the Midwest for the Northwest. Currently finishing her master's degree in English, she has worked in American Indian language education, government archives, and the local foods movement. As part of EdGate, Holly crafts descriptions of educational and documentary films. As part of the wider world, Holly manages an interactive science education program, edits copy for a daily newspaper, and explores lichen and tide pools with her family. She is genuinely excited about Common Core.
