National Night Out
National Night Out is an annual event with a mission  to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie. On August 4, EmPoWER   Somerset  and the Safe Communities Coalition partnered with the North Plainfield, Somerville, Bound Brook, and Bernardsville Police Departments to share substance abuse prevention information, social media initiatives, and fun activities at their local National Night Out events.

Selfie With the Sheriff

The Safe Communities Coalition is partnering with Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano to raise community awareness about the permanent prescription drop-off boxes in Somerset County. Prescription drug drop-off boxes reduce the availability of prescription drugs in the home and prevent prescription drug abuse. This project features a traveling display of a life-size likeness of Sheriff Provenzano alongside a prescription drug drop-off box. Participants are invited to take a selfie with the sheriff at community events and share on social media including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, using #SelfieWithTheSheriff and #DisposeRx. Check out some of the pictures that were taken at the Somerville National Night Out by visiting our Instagram. To learn more about drop-off boxes and locations near you, pl ease visit the Safe Communities Coalition website.

Farewell Abena!

  Dear EmPoWER Somerset Family,

As many of you may already know, I will be leaving EmPoWER Somerset at the end of August to pursue my Master's of Public Health degree at Boston University. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire EmPoWER Somerset staff, board members, community partners, and volunteers for your support and guidance. These past two years at EmPoWER have been such a fulfilling and growing experience. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I have developed a new passion for substance abuse prevention, mental health wellness, and community efforts. I am extremely blessed that I had the opportunity to work in such an encouraging and positive environment with amazing people. Although I will be in Boston for the next two years, I am a true Jersey girl and I intend to surprise many of you at future community events.

Once again, thank you all for the wonderful memories.
With lots and lots of love and gratitude,
Abena Dakwahene

Family Success Center

A community gathering place that brings families together through free events & local activities and connects families to helpful resources in Somerset County...

Over 200 residents attended the EmPoWER FSC's Free Family Pool Party at Memorial Park & Pool in Manville on July 23 rd .  This marked the second consecutive summer that the EmPoWER FSC and Memorial Park & Pool have collaborated to offer this free event to the community.     "I remember all of the Family Fun Nights," exclaimed Brielle, 5 year old event guest, "I never miss a Family Fun Night!"

Pizza was served alongside Rita's Italian Ice donated by Rita's of Somerville while families went swimming, played four square, and participated in a door prize drawing for tote bags and gift cards to a local farmer's market.  Families also had the opportunity to learn about first aid/pool safety from Prestige Medical Solutions, and sun safety from the Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Somerset and Morris Counties.

The Somerset County Council for Young Children,  a parent-driven Council addressing the needs of children from birth to age 8,  conducted parent surveys in June at several local childcare centers and other locations. Based on parent input, the SCCYC Steering Committe has outlined several focus areas within Healthcare, Early Childhood Education, Community Resources, Children with Special Needs, Parent Education & Foster Parent Resources.

The Somerset County Council for Young Children is administered through the Empower Somerset Family Success Center. Any parent in Somerset County who is interested on being on one of the SCCYC Workgroups should contact the Project Coordinator, Patty Haase at [email protected] or 908-722-4400.

We welcome additional members and can accommodate working parents' schedules & offer childcare as necessary to enable more parents to participate on the SCCYC.
