 Joetta Clark Diggs Fitness Challenge

Somerset Intermediate School, North Plainfield

The Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation was busy this Spring. Four-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs and her team coached over 400 students in the Joetta Clark Diggs Fitness Challenge at Plainfield High School in Plainfield and Somerset Intermediate School in North Plainfield. Students competed in both physical and academic challenges. Students trained for weeks with Joetta and her team while learning about being your personal best and the importance of healthy eating and active living. Both programs commenced with an exciting awards ceremony where students were recognized for their accomplishments, perseverance and team work. Thank you to Horizon NJ Health for sponsoring the Plainfield High School challenge and to the Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation for making these events possible!

Diabetes Self Management Program

EmPoWER Somerset facilitated two six-week sessions of the Diabetes Self Management Program at the Hillsborough Senior Center.   Participants learned about healthy eating, physical activity, stress-management, blood sugar monitoring and working with health care providers. In addition the group participated in guided imagery and muscle relaxation. Facilitators encouraged participants to develop weekly action plans which they reported on each week. When asked about how this program has contributed to a positive change one participant said "It changed my eating habits. Now when I go grocery shopping I check the labels on everything!"

Family Success Center

A community gathering place that brings families together through free events & local activities and connects families to helpful resources in Somerset County...

The EmPoWER Family Success Center (FSC) brought free fun to local families through two community events in May and June.   In May the Carnival Family Fun Night, a free indoor carnival held at United Reformed Church in Somerville drew more than 100 attendees for food, games, prizes, and more. One event attendee took to the EmPoWER FSC Facebook page to express her thanks.  "Another amazing job!  Thank you for the wonderful night with my girls!"  In June, EmPoWER FSC participated in the  Flag Day Festival on Main Street in Somerville, providing games, prizes and information on our programs and services.  Over 200 attendees enjoyed the EmPoWER FSC's mini-carnival and signed up to hear about future events.

A special thank you to Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation for their support of these free family fun events!

Coordinated School Health
Youth Leadership Weekend

Over 50 students from central and northern New Jersey gathered in Branchville for the annual Coordinated School Health Youth Leadership Weekend. Students stayed active all weekend with canoeing, dancing, and many team building activities that took place on the scenic camp grounds at the Linley G. Cook 4-H Camp. Students strengthened their leadership skills while making new friends and demonstrating their skills at "Open Mic Night." A great time was had by all. We want to thank all of the schools and chaperones that participated and made this memorable weekend possible for our youth!
