School Health Highlights

School Grant Opportunity
We are pleased to announce the availability of $4,000 health and wellness grants for public middle and high schools to achieve our vision that  New Jersey youth are healthy and ready to learn in a school environment that supports wellness and offers opportunities for healthy choices.  All districts that register with the  Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification program   are eligible to apply. The application deadline is Friday June 10th. These school grants are made possible through EmPoWER Somerset's School Health grant, funded by the New Jersey Department of Health.  A total of thirty grants will be awarded statewide for schools to complete specific Sustainable Jersey for Schools health and wellness actions. EmPoWER Somerset will provide guidance and technical support for ten schools that are selected for funding in the central region.
Public Health Symposium

EmPoWER's director of health & wellness, Kristen Schiro was one of the presenters at the Rutgers annual Public Health Symposium entitled A Healthy Nation Starts with Healthy Children.  Kristen provided an overview of the New Jersey Department of Health child and adolescent program's framework and strategies for improving the health of our children and the impact of health on academic achievement.
Parents As Champions

Congratulations to our 10 parents for completing the Parents as Champions for Healthy Schools program! For five weeks, parents came together to learn about school health, educating the whole child, advocacy and leadership. Working in school teams each team has the opportunity to use the knowledge learned during the workshop and apply for a $1,000 mini grant.   We are looking forward to receiving these grant applications and awarding funds for health and wellness actions in our local schools.
