Halloween BOO-gie a Scary Success

EmPoWER Family Success Center partnered with the Downtown Somerville Alliance and many Division Street Shops to host the 2nd Annual Halloween BOO-gie this Halloween. Division Street was full of happy families trick-or-treating, playing games, listening to music, and participating in our spooky scavenger hunt!  More than 500 people attended this Spooktacular event! Nearly 20 volunteers and over 15 businesses provided their time and skills and donated candy and raffle prizes to support this event!

Safe Communities Coalition

The Far Hills Race is a traditional horse race event that attracts approximately 32,000 spectators. It is a major fundraiser for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset (formerly Somerset Medical Center).

Recently, the event staff has made policy changes toward addressing increased binge drinking and encouraging patrons to drink responsibly. The Far Hills Race committee welcomed the Safe Communities Coalition of Somerset and Hunterdon Counties to provide a free exhibit space in the infield area. The Coalition provided information and activities to reinforce the importance of the 911 Lifeline Legislation and celebrating safely and responsibly. The event was a great way to continue sharing the mission and vision of the Coalition.

EmPoWER Somerset Work@Health

Work@Health, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has made it possible for EmPoWER Somerset to offer employees a wellness program. Over the last 6 weeks, EmPoWER Somerset employees have been participating in a Work@Health initiative called the STRONG program.

This program is designed to educate participants on the importance of the mind/body connection - specifically focused on realizing internal strength by developing physical strength and promoting a strong and healthy way of living. Some workshop topics we have covered are nutritional changes, weight training for healthy body weight, mental wellness and the importance of sleep. Employees have enjoyed the educational and physical training components of the program. We hope to incorporate many of the skills we have learned during STRONG into our everyday lives.
